  • Patent number: 5456542
Abstract: An integrated adjustable data entry keyboard. A divided keyboard arrangement comprises first key field and second key fields pivotably mounted upon a stationary base. The first and second key fields substantially comprise a keyboard arrangement. A space bar is separately attached to the base and occupies a lower keyboard region centrally disposed between the first and second key fields. The space bar is enlarged so as to remain within the radius of a user's thumb's "strike zone" when a user adjusts the first and second key fields. A synchronizing coupling means may be employed to ensure complimentary movement of the first key field relative to the second key field and thereby relative to the user's hands and wrists, even if only one of the individual key fields is pivoted.

  • Patent number: 5196993
Abstract: A portable computer having a base housing and a removable display pivotably mounted thereon, the display being removable from the base housing to be made free-standing on pivotable support feet, while having a removable electrical cable to the base housing.

  • Patent number: 5030128
Abstract: A docking module facilitates conversion of a portable computer between a lap-top mode of operation and a desk-top mode of operation by permitting simultaneous attachment of the computer to a plurality of electrical connectors thereby eliminating the need for individual cable connections between the computer and the respective individual apparatus. Toggle latches that attach the docking module to the computer chassis contain spring biased latches designed to emit an audible signal indicating proper alignment between the complementary connectors on the facing surfaces of the docking module and the computer chassis, whereby toggling of the latches can be undertaken without danger of damaging the connectors.

  • Patent number: 5028025
Abstract: A liquid crystal display for a portable computer is adapted for pivotal mounting to a base. The pivot hinge apparatus includes a torsion rod that is operative to counterbalance the display against the effect of gravity in various angular positions with respect to the base. A band brake cooperates with the torsion rod to permit angular adjustment of the display with respect to the computer.

  • Patent number: 5019465
Abstract: A battery pack apparatus particularly adapted for use on a portable appliance, as for example, a lap-top computer, is removably attached to the appliance by a coupling arangement that is organized so as to compel a wiping action to occur between the contacts of the apparatus and those of the appliance during assembly and disassembly of the apparatus to the appliance. In this way, the buildup of oxide deposits on the respective contacts is prevented. Also disclosed is a detent operated latching arrangement in which the detent is operated by a spring-biased, cam-actuated lever arm that, in turn, is operated by a spring-biased selectively operated actuator bearing a cam which cooperates with an inclined plane follower surface on the lever arm.

  • Patent number: 4978949
Abstract: A liquid crystal display for a portable computer adapted for utilization as an integral part of the computer chassis is separable therefrom to be free-standing in a position remote from the chassis thereby enhancing desk-top operation of the computer. The display possesses locking members that serve to secure the display to the chassis. Manually operated levers effect movement of the locking members between a display-locking condition and a display-releasing condition. Following release of the display the locking members and the levers serve as supports enabling the display to be free-standing remote from the chassis.

  • Patent number: 4912586
Abstract: A clock is provided which is movable so as to maintain an indication of local time constantly in a vertically upward position. A shell bears a plurality of time indicia. A clock motor interior to the shell rotates an eccentric weight about the longitudinal axis of the shell, causing the shell to rotate and roll over a support surface. A pointer attached to the clock motor and opposite the eccentric weight points to the proper local time indicia.

  • Patent number: 4560181
Abstract: A wheelchair and drive mechanism powered by reciprocating operation of a drive lever. The drive mechanism provides a continuously variable gear ratio allowing wheelchair operation at varying speeds and on differing inclines; and is readily fitted to a standard wheelchair by a drive-associated bayonet mount. A drive mechanism ratchet wheel includes an upper and lower radial crank secured for rotation thereabout by an axle. Each crank includes a pawl assembly that engages with circumferential ratchet wheel teeth to transfer drive energy supplied to the radial cranks from connecting arms to the ratchet wheel. The connecting arms are coupled to a reciprocating lever arm and operate in concert with the pawls to alternately engage with and transfer energy to the ratchet wheel, or disengage therefrom. While one connecting arm and associated pawl is transferring energy to the ratchet wheel, the other connecting arm is disengaging an associated pawl from the ratchet wheel.
