    Abstract: A traffic sensor includes an imaging unit that generates a recognition record by image recognition processing a captured image of a vehicle. The recognition record includes personal-identification data useable to identify the vehicle owner, and additional data not useable to identify the vehicle owner. The traffic sensor also includes an obfuscation unit that generates an obfuscated record from the recognition record by converting the personal-identification data into a unique-identifier. The obfuscated record includes the unique-identifier and the additional data. The traffic sensor further includes a transceiver configured to transmit the obfuscated record to a first off-site server without transmitting the recognition record to the first off-site server.

The surveillance device also includes a subsector module that processes the reduced-quality image data to generate subsector data defining one or more sub sectors of the captured image, and an image processing module that identifies one or more specific vehicle characteristics within the one or more subsectors by applying image recognition processing on the full-quality image data only within the one or more subsectors. The reduced quality image data is insufficient for the image recognition processing to identify specific vehicle characteristics therefrom.

    Abstract: A traffic monitoring system includes one or more traffic sensors that generate recognition records by image processing captured images of respective vehicles. The recognition records are datasets of one or more characteristic values representing vehicle characteristics. The system also includes a server system communicatively coupled to the one or more traffic sensors. The server system has a holistic signature module that analyzes the recognition records so as to generate a vehicle signature for each of the respective vehicles, a database that stores the vehicle signatures, and a comparison module that compares a suspect vehicle signature with the vehicle signatures stored in the database, so as to identify one or more potential suspect vehicles whose vehicle signatures match the suspect vehicle signature in excess of a similarity threshold.

    Abstract: A traffic monitoring system includes a roadside traffic sensor unit and an off-site device remote from the traffic sensor unit. The roadside traffic sensor unit includes an imaging device that captures images of vehicles within a field-of-view of the imaging device, an image processing unit that generates a recognition record from the captured images of a vehicle, and a transceiver that transmits the recognition record. The off-site device includes a transceiver that receives the recognition record and a hot list identifying one or more vehicles-of-interest, a memory that stores the received recognition record for up to a retention period, and a processor that sets the retention period based on a comparison of the recognition record to the hot list identified vehicles-of-interest. The retention period can be variably set according to the severity of any “hits” to the hot list.
