  • Publication number: 20030122285
Abstract: A method of resin transfer molding uses an open base mold filled with fiberglass material and a soft tool sealed over the base mold. A vacuum is applied to a vacuum chamber that surrounds the mold and communicates with the fiberglass material through vacuum conduits. Resin is injected into the closed mold and is drawn through the fiberglass material to the edge of the mold with the assistance of the vacuum. The soft tool is preferably a flexible sheet having an edge seal to connect to the base mold and a vacuum channel with a vacuum port that surrounds the mold. The injection head releasably connects to the soft tool and preferably uses a solenoid actuated injector to supply resin to the mold. The injection head can include a self sealing device to seal the injection port and a self cleaning mechanism for flushing resin from the interior chamber of the head.

  • Publication number: 20030114067
Abstract: A coform nonwoven web from multicomponent meltblown filaments and an absorbent, wherein the absorbent material is substantially uniformly dispersed in the z-direction is disclosed. A process of preparing the coform nonwoven web by perturbing the meltblown filaments as they are being produced is also disclosed. The coform material can be used in a variety of absorbent articles such as diapers as the primary liquid retention layer. In addition, the coform nonwoven web can be used in a variety of other articles such as wipes.

  • Publication number: 20030111758
Abstract: A web of thermoplastic multicomponent substantially continuous fibers is mixed with absorbent materials. The multicomponent fibers have a low melting point sheath which is fully activated to melt and wet the absorbent particles. The web is then densified and cooled, securing the aborbents to the web with hardened flow joints and enabling the web to carry high loadings of absorbent while maintaining good web integrity.

  • Publication number: 20020145217
Abstract: A method of preparing fiber preforms disperses fibers and binder on a forming support surface such that the materials are conditioned and then applied to the surface where the composite material solidifies. Reinforcing material, such as fiber, is mixed with binder, such as thermoplastic or thermoset materials, so that the materials adhere. Then, the adhesive mixture is dispersed in a controlled pre-determined weight ratio on the support surface where the mixture sticks to the support surface, cools and solidifies. The deposited mixture can also be shaped further into a final desired shape before complete solidification. This method eliminates the need for solvents and their associated problems. The process does not require a vacuum or plenum system to hold the reinforcing material in place. The preform can be made in any shape, including sections or asymmetric configurations.

  • Publication number: 20020117770
Abstract: Described herein are improvements to processes and equipment for the manufacture of nonwoven webs useful in numerous applications including personal care, protective apparel, and industrial products. The fiber and/or filaments used to form the nonwoven fabric are deposited on a forming surface in a controlled orientation using application of an electrostatic charge to the fibers and/or filaments in combination with directing them to an electrode deflector plate while under the influence of the charge. The plate may be made up of teeth with a separation and angle orientation that are selected in accordance with the desired arrangement of the fibers and/or filaments in the nonwoven web. As a result, properties of the web such as relative strengths in the machine direction and cross-machine direction can be controlled.
