  • Patent number: 8594125
Abstract: A system and method are provided for framing messages in a data streams encoded with redundant information for transmission and recovering the messages at a receiver. The transmission method accepts an energy waveform representing N words at a first bit rate, encoded with redundant information, where each word includes P number of bits. The N words are transformed, creating N transcoded words, where each transcoded word includes Q number of bits, and where Q<P. The N transcoded words are mapped into M lanes in a buffer memory, where M>1 and each lane receives a frame of N/M transcoded words. A frame alignment marker is generated and mapped into each frame. Each frame is represented as an energy waveform that is transmitted on a corresponding physical lane at the first bit rate divided by M.

  • Publication number: 20130273514
Abstract: Different solution methodologies for addressing problems or issues when directing security domain patrolling strategies according to attacker-defender Stackelberg security games. One type of solution provides for computing optimal strategy against quantal response in security games, and includes two algorithms, the GOSAQ and PASAQ algorithms. Another type of solution provides for a unified method for handling discrete and continuous uncertainty in Bayesian Stackelberg games, and introduces the HUNTER algorithm. Another solution type addresses multi-objective security games (MOSG), combining security games and multi-objective optimization. MOSGs have a set of Pareto optimal (non-dominated) solutions referred to herein as the Pareto frontier. The Pareto frontier can be generated by solving a sequence of constrained single-objective optimization problems (CSOP), where one objective is selected to be maximized while lower bounds are specified for the other objectives.

  • Publication number: 20120251374
Abstract: A fluid transfer engine employs a case with a cylindrical inner wall having an operating radius extending from a case axis. A main rotor is carried within the case and incorporates a lobe with a major radius equal to and concentric with the operating radius of the case, the main rotor having a minor radius defining a body. Two peripheral rotors are diametrically opposed with respect to the case axis and rotate within rotor chambers extending from the case. Each peripheral rotor has a radius equal to the minor radius and a center of rotation located at twice the minor radius from the case axis. Each of the peripheral rotors rotates in uniform circular motion with the main rotor in sealing contact with the body and incorporates a sculpted recess for receiving the lobe of the main rotor.

  • Patent number: 8279915
Abstract: A system and method are provided for ordering tap setting modifications in a link partner using a plurality of voltage gain taps, while avoiding minimum and maximum limitations. Provided is a link partner (LP) transmitter having a parallel selectable voltage gain taps. The method sends messages from a network-connected local device (LD) directing the LP to generally change the gain setting of either the pre-tap or the post-tap, as follows. The gain setting of selected tap is changed in the desired direction of modification and then the center tap gain settings is maximally increased until a limit signal is received. If a selected tap increment is desired, the center tap is initially decremented more steps than the desired change in the selected tap.

  • Patent number: 8249080
Abstract: A system and method are provided for transporting a serial stream via a lower speed network using multiple parallel paths. At a transmitter, an optical or electromagnetic waveform is accepted representing a serial stream of digital information, and unbundled into n virtual information streams. Each virtual information stream is divided into a sequence of segments. Each segment is encapsulated, creating a sequence of packets by adding a start indicator to the beginning of each segment, and a terminate indicator to the end of each segment. Each packet is disinterleaved across m lanes and reinterleaved into n branches of framed data. Optical or electromagnetic waveforms representing the framed data are transmitted via n network branches. A receiver is also provided, which essentially reverses the above-described transmission method.

  • Patent number: 8239738
Abstract: A system and method are provided for framing messages in a forward error correction (FEC) structure for data streams encoded with redundant signal conditioning information. The method accepts signal conditioning-encoded words at a first bit rate, and eliminates redundant information in the signal conditioning-encoded words, creating N reduced-bit words of k bits. The k-bit words are mapped into a payload field of N*(k/p) p-bit words. Overhead (OH) and FEC parity fields are generated, and a frame is created including the OH field, payload field, and FEC parity field. The bit values in the frame are then pseudorandomly scrambled and the scrambled frame is transmitted at the first bit rate. A system and method are also presented for recovering the signal conditioning-encoded words from an FEC frame.

  • Publication number: 20120032023
Abstract: A truss for a flying vehicle supports a pair of wings in a manner which facilitates pivoting of the wings between a deployed configuration and a retracted configuration. The truss includes parallel top and bottom plates with the gap therebetween. The wings have wing brackets affixed thereto with the wing brackets pivotably supported by hinge assemblies to the top plate and bottom plate of the truss. Latch assemblies can be selectively actuated to secure the wing brackets and associated wings to the truss in either the deployed configuration or the retracted configuration, so that loads between the wings and the truss are primarily carried through the latch assemblies rather than through the hinge assemblies. A hinge position on the truss and on the wing brackets is selected to maximize wing length tip to tip while minimizing an outline required for the vehicle when the wings are fully retracted.

  • Publication number: 20110304144
Abstract: A power-generating device located in or on the surface of the ocean for generating power utilizing the energy in ocean wave motion. The device is moored to the bow and stern at ˜45° to incoming ocean waves, and with a yawing capability to adjust to change in wave direction. The device delivers power to a shore grid via a submarine cable from a generator. A rotational driving torque to the generator is produced by two long counter-rotating drive tubes, which are held by bearings in the bow hull and the stern hull of the device. As an alternative, hydraulics may be employed for energy capture and power smoothing and used to provide the rotational torque through a hydraulic motor to drive a generator. The main body is partially submerged and has multiple pod floats connected to the structure by rocker arms with bearings through which the drive tubes pass or double-acting hydraulic rams between the arms and the main body, which capture energy through pod displacement and store it in accumulators.

  • Patent number: 8037932
Abstract: A pipe handling assembly includes a pipe engaging apparatus having a pipe gripping mechanism connectable to a top drive such that the top drive transmits rotational movement and axial movement to the pipe gripping mechanism. A pipe handling device is mounted onto the pipe engaging apparatus, the pipe handling device including a link hanger mounted on the pipe engaging apparatus. A link arm has a first end pivotally connectable to the link hanger and an outboard end selected to carry a pipe into a position to be gripped by the pipe engaging apparatus. A bearing isolates rotational movement to the pipe gripping mechanism from the link hanger. A connection rigidly connects the link hanger to the pipe engaging apparatus during operation of the pipe handling assembly. The connection is selected to substantially prevent the link hanger from rotating with the pipe gripping mechanism should the bearing seize.

  • Patent number: 7970226
Abstract: A local image descriptor generation technique that produces a descriptor for an image patch is presented. The technique generally involves smoothing the pixels of the image patch, followed by employing a transformation to produce a transform vector for each of a set of sample points spaced across the image patch. The transform vectors are weighted and spatially accumulated to produce a prescribed number of linearly summed vectors. The linearly summed vectors are concatenated to form a raw local image descriptor, which is normalized to produce a finalized descriptor for the image patch.

  • Publication number: 20110153103
Abstract: A system and method for predictive modeling of building energy consumption provides predicted building energy load values which are determined using kernel smoothing of historical building energy load values for a building using defined scaling factors for scaling predictor variables associated with building energy consumption. Predictor variables may include temperature, humidity, windspeed or direction, occupancy, time, day, date, and solar radiation. Scaling factor values may be defined by optimization training using historical building energy load values and measured predictor variable values for a building. Predicted and measured building energy load values are compared to determine if a preset difference threshold has been exceeded, in which case an alert signal or message is generated and transmitted to electronically and/or physically signal a user.
