The device detects a touch by the user in the touch zone and changes a controllable variable or a pointer to an item within a scrollable list of data elements based on the location of the detected touch relative to the origin axis, where the rate of change is determined by the distance from the touch location to the origin axis and the direction of change is determined by the section in which the touch is detected.
