Abstract: Various embodiments of suture packages are disclosed to provide a surgical needle, having an associated length of suture material, to a surgical suturing instrument. The disclosed suture packages generally include a body portion having a needle supplying loading unit mounted thereon. Various methods of affixing the loading unit to the body portion are disclosed. The body portion defines a suture tray and a cover is provided to secure a suture within the suture tray. A securing ring is provided to secure the cover to the body portion.

Abstract: A handle assembly for operating a surgical instrument is provided and includes a housing; a trigger operatively supported on the housing; and an articulation assembly supported on the housing for effectuating an articulation of an end effector operatively connected to the housing, the articulation assembly being operable to effect articulation of the end effector in a first pair of opposed directions and a second pair of opposed direction which is substantially transverse to the first pair of opposed directions.

Abstract: A method for the placement of sutures in tissue prior to forming an opening in the tissue, the sutures for use in closing the opening, the method includes the steps of passing a first length of suture through a first portion of a tissue in a first direction relative to a target area to be incised, passing the first length of suture through a second portion of the tissue in the first direction, passing a second length of suture through a third portion of the tissue in a second direction relative to the target area to be incised, passing the second length of suture through a fourth portion of the tissue in the second direction, performing a surgical procedure including forming the opening in the tissue, and applying tension to the first length of suture and the second length of suture to close the opening in the tissue.

Abstract: A suture securing device includes a body with a distal end portion defining a suture receiving opening; a shaft and the body being assembled for relative reciprocal motion between a first position and a second position; and a tension coil spring operably attached to the body and operably attached adjacent a distal end portion of the shaft and disposed adjacent a suture receiving opening, When the body and shaft are in the first position, the tension coil spring is in a rest position, and when the body and/or the shaft are in the second position, the tension coil spring is in a tensioned position to form at least one gap therebetween to enable receipt of at least a portion of at least one suture.
