Patent number: 11284184Abstract: A method of calibrating a feedback-based noise cancellation system of an ear device may involve obtaining a measured plant response of the ear device, obtaining a reference plant response value and determining a plant response variation between the reference plant response value and a value corresponding to the measured plant response. The method may involve obtaining a measured a coupler response of the ear device, obtaining a reference coupler response value and determining a coupler response variation between the reference coupler response value and a value corresponding to the measured coupler response. The method may involve determining, based at least in part on the plant response variation and the coupler response variation, a microphone signal gain correction factor and applying the microphone signal gain correction factor to ear device microphone signals that are input to a feedback loop of the feedback-based noise cancellation system.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 2019Date of Patent: March 22, 2022Assignee: Dolby Laboratories Licensing CorporationInventors: Matthew Conrad Fellers, Louis D. Patent number: 7840410Abstract: Blocks of audio information are arranged in groups that share encoding control parameters to reduce the amount of side information needed to convey the control parameters in an encoded signal. The configuration of groups that reduces the distortion of the encoded audio information may be determined by any of several techniques that search for an optimal or near optimal solution. The techniques include an exhaustive search, a fast optimal search and a greed merge, which allow the search technique to tradeoff the reduction in distortion against the bit rate of the encoded signal and/or the computational complexity of the search technique.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 2005Date of Patent: November 23, 2010Assignee: Dolby Laboratories Licensing CorporationInventors: Matthew Conrad Fellers, Mark Stuart Vinton, Claus Bauer, Grant Allen Davidson

Patent number: 7447631Abstract: Audio coding processes like quantization can cause spectral components of an encoded audio signal to be set to zero, creating spectral holes in the signal. These spectral holes can degrade the perceived quality of audio signals that are reproduced by audio coding systems. An improved decoder avoids or reduces the degradation by filling the spectral holes with synthesized spectral components. An improved encoder may also be used to realize further improvements in the decoder.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2002Date of Patent: November 4, 2008Assignee: Dolby Laboratories Licensing CorporationInventors: Michael Mead Truman, Grant Allen Davidson, Matthew Conrad Fellers, Mark Stuart Vinton, Matthew Aubrey Watson, Charles Quito Robinson

The subband signals are examined to assess one or more characteristics of the audio signal. Spectral components are synthesized having the assessed characteristics. The synthesized spectral components are integrated with the subband signals and passed through a synthesis filterbank to generate an output signal. In one implementation, the assessed characteristic is temporal shape and noise-like spectral components are synthesized having the temporal shape of the audio signal.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 27, 2007Publication date: June 12, 2008Inventors: Grant Allen Davidson, Michael Mead Truman, Matthew Conrad Fellers, Mark Stuart Vinton

Patent number: 6449368Abstract: An audio crosstalk-cancelling network that may be implemented in software, such that when run in real time on a personal computer, the canceller has very low mips requirements and uses a small fraction of available CPU cycles. The network is particularly useful for rendering surround sound images outside the space between left and right computer multimedia loudspeakers when the audio from such sources is reproduced. The network includes two signal feedback paths, each feedback path having a time delay and frequency dependent characteristic. The frequency dependent characteristic represents the smoothed difference in the attenuation in the acoustic path between a transducer and the listener's ear farthest from said transducer and the attenuation in the acoustic path between the same transducer and the listener's ear closest to said same transducer. The smoothed difference in the attenuation is implemented by one or more simple digital filters requiring low processing power.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1997Date of Patent: September 10, 2002Assignee: Dolby Laboratories Licensing CorporationInventors: Mark Franklin Davis, Louis Dunn Fielder, Matthew Conrad Fellers

Patent number: 5890125Abstract: A split-band coding system combines multiple channels of input signals into various forms of composite signals and generates spatial-characteristic signals representing soundfield spatial characteristics in a plurality of frequency subbands. The spatial-characteristics signals may be generated in either or both of two forms. In a first form, the signal represents measures of signal levels for subband signals from the input channels. In a second form, the signal represents one or more apparent directions for the soundfield. The type of the spatial-characteristics signal may be adapted dynamically in response to a variety of criteria including input signal characteristics. Temporal smoothing and spectral smoothing of the spatial-characteristics signals may be applied in an encoder. Temporal smoothing and spectral smoothing may be applied to gain factors derived from the spatial-characteristics signals in a decoder.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 1997Date of Patent: March 30, 1999Assignee: Dolby Laboratories Licensing CorporationInventors: Mark Franklin Davis, Matthew Conrad Fellers
