  • Patent number: 6521876
Abstract: A volatiles analyzer is disclosed that includes a source of microwave radiation that can selectively produce at least one predetermined frequency of microwave radiation. A cavity is in communication with the source. The walls of the cavity form a twelve faced polyhedron in which eight faces form a regular octagon and having two faces that are both non-parallel and non-perpendicular to the eight faces of the regular octagon. The polyhedron focuses microwave energy of the predetermined frequency on a balance pan while supporting a plurality of TM and TE modes in the cavity.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 25, 2001
Date of Patent: February 18, 2003
    Assignee: CEM Corporation
Inventors: William Edward Jennings, Matthew Donald Barrett, Edward Earl King
  • Patent number: 6320170
Abstract: A volatiles analyzer is disclosed that includes a source of microwave radiation that can selectively produce at least one predetermined frequency of microwave radiation. A cavity is in communication with the source. The analyzer includes an analytical pan balance with at least its balance pan in the cavity. The walls of the cavity form a polyhedron that focuses microwave energy of the predetermined frequency on the balance pan while supporting a plurality of TM and TE modes in the cavity.

  • Patent number: 6136276
Abstract: A self venting sealable vessel system for microwave assisted chemistry is disclosed. The system includes a vessel formed of a microwave-transparent material, one end of which forms an opening for placing materials inside the vessel, a lid for being seated against the opening, a flexible frame surrounding the vessel and lid and formed of a microwave-transparent material, and means for urging the frame against the vessel and seated lid with a predetermined force to seal the vessel at low pressures and so that the frame refrains from flexing until the pressure inside the vessel exceeds the predetermined force, after which the frame flexes sufficiently to allow the lid to unseat and gases to vent safely from the vessel without rupturing the vessel or the frame.
