  • Patent number: 9933408
Abstract: Method for characterizing the hydrocarbon content of a reformate sample stream comprising methane, water, carbon monoxide, ammonia, and hydrogen from a steam-hydrocarbon reforming process. Water and ammonia are removed from the reformate sample stream and the hydrocarbon content of the reformate sample stream depleted in water and ammonia is measured using a chemical component analyzer.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 10, 2014
Date of Patent: April 3, 2018
Assignee: Air Products and Chemicals, Inc.
    Inventor: Matthew H. MacConnell
  • Publication number: 20170115246
Abstract: Method and apparatus for determining a heating value of a sample hydrocarbon-containing mixture having hydrocarbons and non-hydrocarbons as mixture components. The sample is reacted with an excess amount of oxidant gas in a reaction chamber to form a product gas containing residual oxygen. The molecular weight of the sample is measured and the residual oxygen concentration of the product gas is measured. The heating value is calculated from the measurements of the molecular weight and the residual oxygen concentration. Pure component hydrocarbon gases may be used to calibrate the system.

  • Patent number: 9409773
Abstract: A steam-hydrocarbon reforming process utilizing a prereformer where a portion of the effluent from the prereformer is conditioned and the C2+ hydrocarbon content in the conditioned effluent measured. The molar flow rate of steam to the prereformer is increased or decreased responsive to measuring the C2+ hydrocarbon content of the conditioned effluent.

  • Patent number: 7871826
Abstract: A method for determining a carbon content value of a hydrocarbon-containing mixture. At least one composition-dependent bulk property of the hydrocarbon-containing mixture is measured and optionally at least one non-hydrocarbon component concentration is measured with the resulting measurements used in a carbon content correlation for calculating the carbon content of the hydrocarbon-containing mixture. The carbon content may be used in a hydrogen and/or synthesis gas production process for calculating a target flow rate of steam to be combined with the hydrocarbon-containing mixture to form a mixed feed having a target steam-to-carbon ratio.
