Abstract: Systems and methods are shown for configuring a cable modem using a dedicated user device that include providing a dedicated port on a cable modem for connecting to a user service device, initiating a configuration connection between the user service device and a cable modem that bypasses the cable modem's authentication process, and changing settings on the cable modem in accordance with input from the user service device.

Abstract: A vertical blanking interval (VBI) encoder for providing VBI encoded data supports a “RAW mode” of operation. In particular, the VBI encoder comprises a first FIFO (first-in, first-out) buffer for providing service data to be VBI encoded, and a second FIFO for specifying VBI format data.

Abstract: A user-side receiver system includes a gateway device, which provides an interface between a subscriber-based network, and an output device. A storage system is disposed externally from the gateway device and is coupled to the gateway device through a network interface. The storage system provides memory for storage of data streams transmitted from the network to the gateway device. The network interface links the gateway device to the storage system to cooperatively access and store data to/from the storage system in a way that limits access to the data by a user.
