    Abstract: A pliable refractory metal carrier (46) may have coated thereon an anchor layer (47) to improve adherence to the carrier (46) of a catalytic coating (48). The conformable catalyst member (26, 82, 82?, 126, 226, 326) may be bent to conform to a curved or bent exhaust pipe (20, 220, 320) within which it is mounted. The pliable metal carrier may be in the form of a tube such as carrier (46) having perforations (54) formed therein, or it may be a metal strip (76) which is folded into accordion pleats (80) and has perforations (78) formed therein. The perforations (54, 78) serve to permit the passage of exhaust gas therethrough. A series of interior closures (58) and annular baffles (60) may be provided to import a serpentine flow path to gases flowed through an exhaust pipe (22) containing a conformable catalyst member (226) therein. A mounting member (68) may be supplied to fasten one end of the conformable catalyst member (226) to the discharge end of an exhaust pipe (220).

    Abstract: A method for treating cooking fumes to oxidize oxidizeable particulate and gaseous components thereof includes contacting the fumes with a catalytic material containing ceria and alumina each having a BET surface of at least about 10 m.sup.2 /g, for example, ceria and activated alumina in a weight ratio of from about 1.5:1 and 1:1.5 and a BET surface area of from about 25 m.sup.2 /g to 200 m.sup.2 /g. Optionally, a catalytic metal component such as platinum or palladium may be included in the catalytic material. The foodstuffs cooking fumes are contacted with the catalyst composition (22 or 40) at a temperature of 200.degree. C. to 600.degree. C. to promote the oxidation of both particulate (atomized) animal and/or vegetable oils and fats and oxidizeable gas phase components of the fumes. Optionally, a separate, supplemental gas phase oxidation catalyst (42) may be used in conjunction with and downstream of the above-described catalyst (40) to provide a two-catalyst system for treating cooking fumes.

The catalyst body may, optionally, contain additional catalyst members downstream of the at least one catalyst member. The separator body contains a carrier-type monolith containing ceramic fibers in a matrix. One of the optional additional catalyst members may also contain such a monolith on which the catalyst composition is disposed.
