Patent number: 9959634Abstract: Methods and systems for identifying depth data associated with an object are disclosed. The method includes capturing, with an image capturing device, a plurality of source images of the object. The image capturing device has a sensor that is tilted at a known angle with respect to an object plane of the object such that the image capturing device has a depth of field associated with each source image, the depth of field defining a plane that is angled with respect to the object plane. An image processor analyzes the plurality of source images to identify segments of the source images that satisfy an image quality metric. Position data is assigned to the identified segments of the source images, the position data including depth positions based on the plane defined by the depth of field.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2012Date of Patent: May 1, 2018Assignee: Google LLCInventors: Peter Gregory Brueckner, Iain Richard Tyrone McClatchie, Matthew Thomas Valente

Publication number: 20170363949Abstract: In on the general aspect, a camera rig can include a first tier of images sensors including a first plurality of image sensors where the first plurality of image sensors are arranged in a circular shape and oriented such that a field of view of each of the first plurality of image sensors has an axis perpendicular to a tangent of the circular shape. The camera rig can include a second tier of image sensors including a second plurality of image sensors where the second plurality of image sensors are oriented such that a field of view of each of the second plurality of image sensors has an axis non-parallel to the field of view of each of the first plurality of image sensors.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 17, 2017Publication date: December 21, 2017Inventors: Matthew Thomas VALENTE, Robert ANDERSON, David GALLUP, Christopher Edward HOOVER

Publication number: 20160349791Abstract: A device includes a top cover, a bottom cover connected to the top cover, where the bottom cover is configured to hold an electronic device, and one or more components of a virtual reality headset configured to fold flat on an inner side of the top cover. The components of the virtual reality headset may include a lens frame assembly and a support member.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 25, 2016Publication date: December 1, 2016Inventors: Christian PLAGEMANN, David COZ, Matthew Thomas VALENTE, Peter Gregory BRUECKNER

Patent number: 9212715Abstract: In one aspect, a tunable vibration damper may include a housing and a damper stack disposed within the housing. The damper stack may be formed from a viscoelastic material and may have a vertical stiffness and a horizontal stiffness. The damper stack may also include a plurality of column sections and a plurality of disk sections, with each pair of adjacent column sections being separated by one of the disk sections. The disk sections may extend radially outwardly relative to the column sections. In addition, at least one of the vertical stiffness or the horizontal stiffness may be tunable by adjusting a stiffness-related parameter of the damper stack.Type: GrantFiled: June 20, 2013Date of Patent: December 15, 2015Assignee: Google Inc.Inventors: Alexander Thomas Starns, Matthew Thomas Valente, Iain Richard Tyrone McClatchie

Patent number: 9006983Abstract: One exemplary implementation of the present disclosure is directed to a lighting system for detecting the source of glare in imagery. The lighting system includes a first illumination light and a second illumination light each having an associated signal light. Each illumination light is configured to be illuminated independent of the other illumination light and both signal lights. Each signal light has a different spectral peak from the other signal light. The lighting system further includes a control system configured to control the illumination of the first and second illumination lights and associated signal lights based at least in part on identified glare.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2012Date of Patent: April 14, 2015Assignee: Google Inc.Inventors: Peter Gregory Brueckner, Matthew Thomas Valente

Patent number: 8736706Abstract: Methods and systems for generating high resolution composite imagery are provided. The methods and systems can create a fully-in-focus high resolution composite image by combining a number of source images in which only a part of the source image is in-focus. The composite image can be analyzed to identify portions of the composite image that satisfy an image quality metric. The capture of additional source images can be controlled based at least in part on the image analysis of the composite image. In addition, a control routine for capturing the plurality of source images can be dynamically adjusted based on the image quality of the individual source images.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2012Date of Patent: May 27, 2014Assignee: Google Inc.Inventors: Matthew Thomas Valente, Richard Francis Lyon, Peter Gregory Brueckner
