    Abstract: A polyalkylene glycol having the general formula:HO--[R--O--].sub.n Hin which n has a value of at least 2 and R is an alkylene radical containing at least 20 carbon atoms is provided. Preferred polyalkylene glycols have an alkylene radical which is a branched alkylene radical containing at least 10 carbon atoms in the main chain and a degree of polymerization such that n is from 4 to 7. The polyalkylene glycol is prepared by the acid-catalyzed polycondensation of a monomeric alkylene glycol at elevated temperature.
