Patent number: 8956032Abstract: An optical system having a light guide (3) and a reflector (6) is described. The light guide transports, during use, light from a first end (30) to a second end (31) of the light guide. The light guide has an entrance surface (2) at the first end for allowing incident light to enter the light guide at an entrance axis (8). The light guide further has a coupling element (5) at the second end for coupling light out of the light guide at a coupling axis (9) for illuminating the reflector. The light guide further has a solid rod-like guiding section (32) for guiding light entered in the light guide from the first end to the coupling element. The rod-like guiding section has one or more bends (33,34). Each light ray of the light guided to the coupling element is reflected in the bend (s) one or more times. Patent number: 8337031Abstract: The invention relates to a color-tunable illumination system (10), to a lamp and to a luminaire. The color-tunable illumination system comprises a light source (20) emitting light of a first predefined color (B), and comprises a luminescent material (30) for converting light of the first predefined color into light of a second predefined color (A). The color-tunable illumination system further comprises shielding means (40, 42) arranged for preventing at least part of the light emitted by the light source to impinge on the luminescent material. The light source, the luminescent material and/or the shielding means are changeable from a first situation to a second situation. In the first situation the color-tunable illumination system is arranged for shielding at least part of the luminescent material against impinging light of the first predefined color.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 2008Date of Patent: December 25, 2012Assignee: Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.Inventors: Rene Theodorus Wegh, Christoph Gerard August Hoelen, Chantal Sweegers, René Jan Hendriks, Martijn Henri Richard Lankhorst, Nicolas Gerardus Antonius Peeters, Martinus Petrus Joseph Peeters, Ramon Pascal Van Gorkom, Matthijs Hendrik Keuper, Coen Theodorus Hubertus Fransiscus Liedenbaum

Patent number: 7535168Abstract: A light-emitting diode comprises a chip emitting visible light of a first wavelength, a light-emitting surface and a phosphor layer provided on the light-emitting surface. Said phosphor layer is capable of converting light of the first wavelength to visible light of a second wavelength. According to the invention, a part of the light-emitting surface is not covered with the phosphor layer. Preferably, the size of said surface is chosen to be such that by mixing emitted light of the first and the second wavelength substantially white light is obtained. Preferably, the surface that is not covered with the phosphor layer comprises a plurality of sub-surfaces, preferably arranged in the form of a pattern.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 2001Date of Patent: May 19, 2009Assignee: Philips Lumiled Lighting, U.S. LLCInventor: Matthijs Hendrik Keuper

Patent number: 7364343Abstract: A compact backlight system for illuminating a display device (12) has a light-emitting panel (1) with a front wall (2) and an opposed rear wall (3) and with edge surfaces (4, 5). At least one of the edge surfaces (4) is light-transmitting. The backlight system has a light source (6) comprising a limited number of LEDs. Light from the light source (6) is coupled into the light-emitting panel (1) via the edge surface that is light-transmitting. According to the invention, the light-emitting panel (1) is wedge-shaped, and the surface area Si of the light-transmitting edge surface (4) and the surface area Sr of the opposite edge surface (5) fulfill the relation: 1<(Sr/Si)<10, preferably 1.5<(Sr/Si)<5. Light travelling for the first time from the light-transmitting edge surface through the light-emitting panel (1) towards the opposite edge surface (5) cannot be coupled out of the light emitting panel (1).Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 2002Date of Patent: April 29, 2008Assignee: Philips Lumileds Lighting Company LLCInventors: Matthijs Hendrik Keuper, Robert Frans Maria Hendriks
