Patent number: 8221005Abstract: A connector is provided. The connector includes a body extending a length along a central longitudinal axis. The body includes first and second elements that each include opposite first and second end portions. A third element is positioned between at least a portion of the first and second elements. A portion of the third element and a portion of the first element extend within the second element. A portion of the first element extends within the third element. The first end portions of the first and second elements are exposed with respect to the third element. The second end portions of the first and second elements are exposed with respect to the third element. The exposed first end portions of the first and second elements are spaced apart with respect to each other along the length of the body. The exposed second end portions of the first and second elements are spaced apart with respect to each other along the length of the body.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2009Date of Patent: July 17, 2012Assignee: Tyco Electronics CorporationInventors: Laurence A. Daane, Matthijs P. Smits

Patent number: 7133715Abstract: An apparatus and method for evaluation of hearing loss is disclosed. The apparatus and method use evoked Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR) to determine if the subject is able to hear click stimuli that are repeatedly administered. In order to facilitate efficient differentiation of the ABR from the accompanying noise, normative data is used to detect test conditions where physiological, non-physiological, and ambient acoustic noise would interfere with the progression of test.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2000Date of Patent: November 7, 2006Assignee: Natus Medical Inc.Inventors: Matthijs P. Smits, Bryan P. Flaherty

Patent number: 6620100Abstract: An apparatus and method for evaluation of hearing loss is disclosed. The apparatus and method use evoked Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR) to determine if the subject is able to hear repeatedly administered click stimuli. In order to optimize evaluation, the present invention uses normative data to accurately weight the auditory responses, so that evaluation will be possible in different or changing noise conditions.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 2001Date of Patent: September 16, 2003Assignee: Natus Medical Inc.Inventors: Matthijs P. Smits, Aaron R. Thornton

Patent number: 6544190Abstract: A noninvasive apparatus and method for measuring a subject's end tidal carbon monoxide concentration is disclosed, featuring the ability to (i) determine carbon monoxide concentration on a breath-by-breath basis, (ii) determine mean carbon monoxide concentration by averaging local carbon monoxide values, (iii) avoid the premature determination that an end tidal phase is over, and (iv) determine when breath variability or system variability will likely preclude accurate testing. The disclosed device and method allow for more robust determination of end tidal carbon monoxide concentration in subjects with turbulent or irregular breath patterns.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 2001Date of Patent: April 8, 2003Assignee: Natus Medical Inc.Inventors: Matthijs P. Smits, Bryan P. Flaherty

Patent number: 6475163Abstract: An apparatus and method for evaluation of hearing loss is disclosed. The apparatus and method use evoked Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR) to determine if the subject is able to hear iteratively administered click stimuli. The present invention evaluates the sufficiency of the patient connections, namely earphones and electrodes, to the evaluation device. More particularly, the present invention determines if the earphones are detached or deformed, if the electrodes have been reversed, or if the electrodes have become detached.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2000Date of Patent: November 5, 2002Assignee: Natus Medical, IncInventors: Matthijs P. Smits, Vineet Bansal, Abraham J. Totah, Bryan P. Flaherty, Alfred Christian Walton

Patent number: 6343230Abstract: An apparatus and method for evaluation of hearing loss is disclosed. The apparatus and method use evoked Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR) to determine if the subject is able to hear repeatedly administered click stimuli. In order to expedite evaluation, the present invention uses normative data to accurately predict when a subject is likely to fail the test, so that evaluation will not needlessly continue for a subject who is very unlikely to pass.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2000Date of Patent: January 29, 2002Assignee: Natus Medical, Inc.Inventors: Matthijs P. Smits, Christophe M. Coppin

Patent number: 5711307Abstract: An apparatus for detecting myoelectric activity from the surface of the skin has an electrode pair, processing circuitry, and up to three output leads. The signals detected at the electrode contacts are differentiated, amplified, and then filtered. The filtered signals are provided as a first input signal to a switch and a ground signal is provided as a second input signal to the switch. The amplified, unfiltered signals are tested against a preset threshold. If the signals exceed the threshold, the signals are considered to have significant amounts of noise. In this case, a comparator causes the switch to provide the ground signal as the output signal. Otherwise, the switch provides the filtered signals as the output signal. One output line provides the amplified, unfiltered signals for testing and analysis. The apparatus can be used as part of a prosthetic device, or can be used for testing with a plurality of electrode pairs.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 1995Date of Patent: January 27, 1998Assignee: Liberty Mutual Insurance CompanyInventor: Matthijs P. Patent number: 5336269Abstract: The invention comprises a method and apparatus for switching between degrees of freedom in a prosthesis responsive to myoelectric signals generated by muscles. In the invention, an average pattern corresponding to a specified muscle contraction is stored in memory. In operation, the invention continuously stores a specified preceding interval of the incoming myoelectric signals and compares the data in that interval with the stored average pattern. If the incoming data is sufficiently similar to the stored average pattern, a recognition occurs and the device switches degrees of freedom.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 1992Date of Patent: August 9, 1994Assignee: Liberty Mutual Insurance Co.Inventor: Matthijs P.
