  • Patent number: 4406739
Abstract: A procedure for dewatering and detaching a paper web from the second former wire. The composite of first and second wire and interposed web is contacted with a first cover part of a special suction box. A roll guiding the second wire, pressing from the side of the latter deflects its run. This pressure plus centrifugal force, and the differential pressure arising from the suction box, dewater the web. The second wire is separated to follow along with the guide roll, while web and first wire are acted on by the suction box vacuum. The first wire is then contacted with a second cover part of the suction box. A twin-wire former is also disclosed, featuring within its carrying wire loop, on its twin-wire run, a rotating forming roll deflecting the composite of wires and web as it laps a given sector of said forming roll. A special suction box at the ultimate end of the wires has a bipartite cover its parts angulated against each other and preferably planar.

  • Patent number: 4285766
Abstract: A method in a paper machine press section for dewatering a wet paper web by threading the web in an improved way and avoiding crushing or stretching the web structure through at least three nips of the press section. The invention is particularly characterized by following features of dewatering steps. The web while passing the press section through said three nips is all the time adhered to and supported by the surface of a felt or a roll without any open draws therebetween. Pressing the web in the first nip takes place between two felts and so the web is dewatered simultaneously through both sides of the web. Further dewatering and pressing steps take place in press nips which all are formed against a plain roll having a large diameter which enables a spacious location of the press rolls and their felts. Detaching the web from the surface of said plain roll for conducting the web into dryer section, takes place in a point allowing easy removal and handling in case of a web break.

  • Patent number: 4236962
Abstract: In a paper making machine, a method and apparatus for separating the web from the former wire and transferring the same to a transfer felt which preferably comprises a press felt wherein the web is carried by the former wire over a sector of a reverser roll so that it is subjected to a centrifugal force which tends to separate the web from the former wire and wherein the transfer felt is guided so that it engages the web over at least a portion of the sector of the reverser roll lapped by the web carrying former wire. An external suction is applied to the web through the transfer felt in the region of the sector of the reverser roll lapped by the web carrying former wire and engaged transfer felt which subjects the web to a suction force which acts in substantially the same direction as the centrifugal force.

  • Patent number: 4224104
Abstract: A paper machine has a forming wire loop which transports a web to a detachment transfer roll situated inside said wire loop at a detaching location where the web is to be detached from the wire and transported to a press section. A relatively dry felt engages the web on a sector of the detachment transfer roll at the detaching location and receives the web from the wire and continues to transport the web, while it adheres to the felt, to the press section. The detachment of the web from the wire on the detachment transfer roll is facilitated by the centrifugal force acting on the web which results from the substantial change of direction undergone by the web on the detachment transfer roll. In one embodiment, the press felt is directed to cover the web on a sector of the detachment roll by a press suction roll located on substantially the same level as the detachment transfer roll, the press roll having a suction sector which facilitates transfer of the web from the wire to the felt.

  • Patent number: 4202113
Abstract: A paper machine drying section and method for operating the same are provided for reliably maintaining a web in engagement with a drying fabric at locations where the fabric is situated between the web and drying cylinders. Those drying cylinders which are directly contacted by the drying fabric, so that the web is separated therefrom by the drying fabric, are formed with recessed outer surfaces having voids across which the fabric extends. The pressure in these voids is maintained at a magnitude less than the pressure at the outer surface of the web where it travels around those cylinders from which it is separated by the fabric, so that in this way the web is urged by the pressure differential toward the fabric so as to be incapable of becoming detached therefrom.

  • Patent number: 4172759
Abstract: In a paper-manufacturing machine a web is subjected to suction by placing a space between the web and a suction roll lapped thereby in communication with a region of substantially less than atmospheric pressure which is maintained at a part of the suction roll which is not lapped by the web. The structure includes a jacket which defines with the part of the suction roll which is not lapped by the web a hollow region with which a source of suction communicates. This hollow region of less than atmospheric pressure is situated at the exterior of the suction roll and bounded in part by an exterior surface of the suction roll, so that the hollow interior of the shell of the suction roll need not necessarily be utilized for providing the suction at the web.

  • Patent number: 4113556
Abstract: A paper machine has a pair of endless wire loops respectively having elongated portions which travel together upwardly along a common path where the wire loops form a twin-wire former. This common path has a lower receiving end for receiving pulp stock from which a web is to be formed and an upper discharge end from which a web issues from the twin-wire former while being transported by one of the endless wire loops beyond the discharging end of the common path. A lower forming roll around which the endless wire loops are lapped determines the lower receiving end of the common path as well as an initial portion of the common path along which the wire loops travel together. An upper forming roll is also lapped by the endless wire loop and determines the discharge end of the common path as well as a final portion thereof.

  • Patent number: 4113557
Abstract: A paper machine has a wire which transports a web to a detaching location where the web is to be detached from the wire and transported to a press section. A felt travels up to and beyond the detaching location to engage the web at the detaching location and receive the web from the wire while continuing to transport the web, while it adheres to the felt, to the press section. At the detaching location, by way of a structure which preferably is in the form of a suction box, a flow of air is created to travel first through the wire, then through the web, and then through the felt with this flow of air being highly localized so as to travel only through a relatively narrow rectangular area which extends transversely across the felt throughout the entire width thereof as well as the entire width of the web and wire.

  • Patent number: 4089738
Abstract: During the manufacture of a paper product such as paper or cardboard, a moving web of sheet material which is to form the paper product is lapped over a roll while the relatively smooth, hard surface of a smoothing member is pressed against an outer surface region of the sheet material across the entire width thereof while an inner surface region thereof engages the roll, so as to impart in this way desired characteristics to the surface of the web engaged by the smoothing member, with a frictional rubbing action being provided between the web and the surface of the smoothing member. The above roll may be the roll of a press section, a drying section, or a calendering section of a paper machine, and a suitable support structure carries the smoothing member to maintain the latter in engagement with the moving web. The smoothing member may be fixed to the supporting structure or may take the form of a smoothing roller supported for rotary movement by the supporting structure.
