  • Publication number: 20020146018
Abstract: A computer-implemented system for providing access to Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)-based services by providing a Web-based Administration Console utilizing the WAP environment; providing a secure method to log in and access the WAP environment; enabling administrators to perform maintenance operations without interrupting users' access to the WAP environment; monitoring the status of all modules controlled by the Administration Console; monitoring events occurring within such Console; editing the configuration parameters of the Administration Console; managing those users or groups of users who access the WAP Environment via such Console; administering accounting functions associated with billing those users or groups of users who access the WAP Environment via such Console; establishing groups of users who access the WAP Environment via such Console; establishing of aliases accessible only by specific users or groups of users; and enabling service providers to add their services to those which are acc

  • Publication number: 20020115456
Abstract: A method and system for efficiently coding ring tone data and other data for delivery to telephone handsets, such as in a mobile telephone network. In one aspect, the data are encoded using a compact, byte-aligned format that is easy to parse. The data are provided in code words having respective code portions (bit positions) that are correlated by their relative positions within the code word with a respective characteristic of the data, such as a ring tone (e.g., note, length, octave, and volume). Accordingly, there is no need to provide identifiers for each characteristic. In another aspect, special instructions (e.g., tempo changes and looping) for modifying ring tone data or other data are chained to a code word that contains the baseline (nominal) characteristics to maintain compatibility with telephones that do not recognize special instructions.

  • Publication number: 20020049675
Abstract: The present invention is a system for managing users and services over a Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Gateway. The system provides a way to create and maintain user and group accounts and a method of authenticating user identities for the purpose of assigning an access level and granting the use of services. The system also provides for: assigning service subscriptions to a specific user or group; setting parameters on the length of time a specific user or group has access to services; defining payers and payment methods for each service subscription that a user or a group has; defining user and group aliases for customized identification; importing or exporting user and group information in a usable format; a user interface capable of implementing all the features of the system; and cooperating with data storage equipment and data storage and processing software required for the management of users and services.

  • Publication number: 20020029197
Abstract: The present invention is a method and system for implementing the billing features of a Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Gateway. The system provides for billing on multiple plans that can vary the method of billing, the time of payment, the entity responsible for payment, and the price of various services offered. In addition, the system allows for billing of individuals or groups of individuals on a uniform billing plan. The Gateway collects billing data in an information database from which data can be transferred to a separate billing system in a standard format. Because the billing data output from the information database is in the same format as all common telephone billing systems, billing for services used through the Gateway is very convenient. The billing system also provides for identification of individual users based upon a bearer address (e.g. MSISDN, telephone number, or IP address) for authorization and billing purposes.
