  • Patent number: 4825520
Abstract: Method for stabilizing a glide shoe loaded against an inner face of a revolving mantle of a roll adjustable in zones. The glide shoe is supported by an articulated joint on a piston which loads the glide shoe with adjustable pressure. In order to ensure lubrication of the glide face between the glide shoe and the inner face of the roll mantle, within an area of a front edge of the glide face as seen in a direction of rotation of the roll mantle, a shifting and/or steepening of compression pressure applied by the glide shoe through lubricant onto the inner face of the roll mantle is produced by means of a wedge space within the front edge of the glide face, said shifting and/or steepening in turn generating a moment having a direction opposite to a direction of a moment produced by frictional force of the glide face of the shoe. The thickness of the lubricant film is increased by this moment in the area of the front side of the glide face.

  • Patent number: 4775773
Abstract: Method and apparatus for controlling the thickness profile of a web passing through a calendering nip formed by two rolls, in which a variable magnetic flux is directed onto an outer surface on one of the rolls from a magnetic shoe device comprising a plurality of cores situated externally of the roll and over substantially the entire axial length thereof. Each core is spaced a discrete distance from the roll surface, with the magnetic flux acting to induce eddy currents along the surface of the roll, generating heat thereon. The roll diameter is changed over the length of the roll in a manner corresponding to the axial temperature profile of the roll, with the changes in diameter of the roll in turn determining the pressure profile across the calendering nip, and thereby determining the thickness profile of the web passing therethrough.

  • Patent number: 4757582
Abstract: A method for controlling the transverse thickness profile of paper or other web-like product by controlling temperature, including the axial temperature profile, of the mantle of a roll forming a nip with another roll in the manufacture of the paper or other web-like product includes forming a layer of heat transfer liquid on the inner surface of the mantle under the effect of the centrifugal forces generated by the rotation of the mantle, the layer of heat transfer liquid being divided into separate annular sections, and controlling the temperature of the heat transfer liquid layer of each of the sections. A roll in accordance with the invention includes a cylindrical outer mantle rotatably mounted at its axial ends, a stationary inner shaft situated within the mantle and partitions for dividing a layer of heat transfer liquid formed on the inner surface of the mantle into a plurality of separate annular sections.

  • Patent number: 4675487
Abstract: Apparatus and method for electromagnetic heating of a roll by induction, in which a variable magnetic flux is directed into an outer surface of the roll from a magnetic shoe device comprising a plurality of cores situated externally of the roll and over substantially the entire axial length thereof. Each core is spaced a discrete distance from the roll surface. The magnetic flux acts to induce eddy currents along the surface of the roll, thus generating heat thereon.

  • Patent number: 4653395
Abstract: Method and apparatus in the calendering of a web in a calender comprising a calender stack including at least two calender rolls situated substantially one over the other defining at least one calendering nip between them in which the web to be calendered is pressed at a suitable linear load, and wherein the outer rolls of the stack are provided with internal apparatus for varying or adjusting the roll crowns. The mantle of one or both of the calender rolls defining a calendering nip is heated to produce in the web passing through the nip a significant temperature differential in the thickness direction of the web between its interior portion and its surface layers and/or between its opposite surface layers. In this manner, the mechanical calendering work normally a function of the linear loading of the calender rolls is compensated for by the temperature gradient produced by the temperature differential which acts on the plastic properties of the web.

  • Patent number: 4634068
Abstract: A method for controlling paper web reel-up, particularly in a Pope-type reel-up apparatus, wherein a reeling cylinder provides power to a paper web reel being formed on a reeling drum at a nip formed between the periphery of the reeling cylinder and the periphery of the web reel being formed. The reeling operation is begun with the reeling drum held in primary forks. The reeling drum and inner section of the web reel formed on it are removed from the primary forks and delivered to secondary forks in which the final steps of the reeling operation are carried out. The primary and secondary forks are coupled to power equipment by which the loading of the power-transmitting nip is generated.
