Publication number: 20070146096Abstract: A phase locked magnetron comprises a cathode and anode and an interaction space in between. The cathode is coupled to an injected locking signal, which prompts the operation of the magnetron to be in phase with the phase of the locking signal. From a magnetron of the type in which the cathode is at a large negative potential, the coupling to the locking signal is by non-contact means, in particular, by extending the cathode into a waveguide in which the locking signal is present. An alternative arrangement is for a magnetron of the type in which the cathode is substantially at ground potential. In this arrangement the coupling is by direct electrical connection to a conductor having the injected locking signal.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 17, 2004Publication date: June 28, 2007Applicant: E2V TECHNOLOGIES (UK) LIMITEDInventors: Xiaodong Chen, Peter Lindsay, Maurice Esterson

Patent number: 4728860Abstract: An external cavity klystron vacuum tube has a ceramic cylindrical wall surrounded by an external cavity within which is an output probe. The cylindrical wall section is sealed at its ends to other components of the tube--to enable the interior to be evacuated--by sealing means such as to avoid a sharp edge projecting inwardly towards the interior of the cavity.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 1986Date of Patent: March 1, 1988Assignee: English Electric Valve Company LimitedInventors: Maurice Esterson, Jennifer Harley nee May

Patent number: 4672340Abstract: A resonant cavity device--particularly a magnetron oscillator--has a separate resonator coupled to a resonant cavity of the device. The separate resonator consists of a resonant transmission line within which are two multipactor discharge arrangements, one being positioned at a distance along a resonant transmission line which is approximately 3.lambda./4 from the end of the transmission line adjacent the cathode and the other of which is positioned at a distance along the resonant transmission line which is .lambda./4 from the same end of the transmission line. By controlling the multipactor discharges of the multipactor discharge devices appropriately three different frequencies of operation are available.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 1979Date of Patent: June 9, 1987Assignee: English Electric Valve Company LimitedInventors: Maurice Esterson, Michael B. Patent number: 4658181Abstract: The invention provides a travelling wave tube having a directly heated cathode. Cathode material is applied in a depression in one U-shaped member of a high resistance alloy material and the return path for heater current is provided by another U-shaped strip member beneath the first. The configurations of the two strip members are similar so that stray magnetic fields generated by the equal but opposite currents flowing therein, tend to neutralize one another. In another embodiment the two strip members are replaced by generally cylindrical members, one member being within the other. The surface of the member providing the return path for heater current is polished where it faces the member carrying the cathode material so as to reflect back heat radiated by the last-mentioned member.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1984Date of Patent: April 14, 1987Assignee: English Electric Valve Company LimitedInventors: Brian F. Cooper, Maurice Esterson

Patent number: 4599542Abstract: The invention provides a linear beam tube which may be protected against high voltage arcs between the cathode and anode of its electron gun by connecting to ground a limiting impedance in a series path from said anode. The anode is carried upon the end of a ceramic cylinder which is co-axially within a conical metallic member. The end of the ceramic cylinder remote from the anode is attached to one end of said conical metallic member, the other end of which is flanged, with the flange passing through the tube envelope to provide an external termination which may be connected to ground. Resistive material is deposited in a groove in the inner surface of said ceramic cylinder to form a deposited impedance which extends from the anode over the end of the ceramic cylinder, to the end of the conical metallic member and constitutes said limiting impedance.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1984Date of Patent: July 8, 1986Assignees: English Electric Valve Company Limited, The Secretary of State for Defence in Her Britannic Majesty's Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern IrelandInventors: Robin C. M. King, Maurice Esterson, John Clarke

Patent number: 4296385Abstract: A multipactor discharge tuned resonant cavity device, e.g. a magnetron, is irradiated with X-rays in order to assist the starting of the multipactor discharge. The X-rays are produced by electrons striking the surface of the magnetron anode.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1980Date of Patent: October 20, 1981Assignee: English Electric Valve CompanyInventors: Maurice Esterson, Michael B. Patent number: 4147953Abstract: A linear beam tube is provided with a gridded electron gun in which a concave cathode surface is provided with concave channels from which electrons are emitted. The channels may be arranged as concentric annuli. In a preferred embodiment the channels extend radially outwards from the center of the cathode to minimize the effects of temperature distortion. The cathode is provided with a shadow grid and a control grid is spaced from and aligned therewith.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1976Date of Patent: April 3, 1979Assignee: English Electric Valve Company LimitedInventor: Maurice Esterson

Patent number: 4105911Abstract: A coupled cavity travelling wave tube is disclosed which has a sever including a termination wedge, a sever pole piece with a drift tube and a termination cavity member defining a rectangular waveguide. Disposed in the rectangular waveguide are preformed projections which are provided so as to engage with the termination wedge, the termination wedge thereby being sandwiched between the projections and the sever pole piece.Type: GrantFiled: November 30, 1976Date of Patent: August 8, 1978Assignee: English Electric Valve Company LimitedInventors: Robin C.
