Publication number: 20220154540Abstract: A secondary latch mechanism (also referred to as a lockout mechanism) for a gripping tool, such as a casing running tool (CRT), prevents activation of the CRT prior to full insertion of a tubular workpiece into the CRT. When embodied in a CRT, the lockout mechanism prevents activation of the CRT unless a fully-inserted tubular workpiece applies a selected axial load to a bumper mounted on the CRT. The lockout mechanism is operable between a locked state and an unlocked state. In the locked state, the lockout mechanism prevents relative axial movement between the CRT cage and mandrel, and keeps the CRT slips retracted away from the workpiece. When in the unlocked state, there is no significant restriction to the normal movement of the CRT components, and the CRT functions as if the lockout mechanism were not present.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 6, 2021Publication date: May 19, 2022Inventor: Maurice W. SLACK

Patent number: 10081989Abstract: A tool for gripping a tubular workpiece comprises: a land element for reacting compressive load against an end face of the workpiece; grip elements and grip element carrier means; a main body with means for converting axial motion of the tool relative to the workpiece into radial movement of the grip elements from a retracted position to an engaged position exerting radial load on the workpiece; and retractor means for retracting the grip elements from the workpiece the tool is displaced axially away from the workpiece. The grip element carrier means may comprise a cylindrical cage with the grip elements being radially slidable within circumferentially-spaced windows in the cage. The means for converting axial movement and load into radial movement and load may comprise a cone or ramp surface that bears against the grip elements such that radial loads from the grip surfaces are carried through the main body.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 2017Date of Patent: September 25, 2018Inventor: Maurice W. Patent number: 7909109Abstract: An anchoring device for tool is disclosed that can be positioned downhole and used in casing. The anchoring device can have an architecture that supports installation by running downhole and into engagement with a recess formed in the casing. The anchoring device can support the use of weak materials such as plastic.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 2007Date of Patent: March 22, 2011Assignee: Tesco CorporationInventors: Per G. Angman, Maurice W. Slack

Patent number: 7878256Abstract: A burst plug for positioning in a downhole fluid passage has: a shear disc installable in a sealing position in the fluid passage. The shear disc is openable by applying fluid at a burst pressure against the shear disc. The burst plug has a retainer and sleeve formed to retain the shear disc in a fluid flow blocking position after the shear disc is removed from its sealing position. The sleeve has a shear disc retaining position in locking engagement with the retainer when fluid at burst pressure is in communication therewith. The sleeve thereafter assumes a shear disc removal position when fluid in communication therewith is reduced to a selected pressure lower than the burst pressure. In the shear disc removal position, the sleeve and retainer disengage from the blocking position, allowing the shear disc and retainer to be expelled from the fluid passage.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 2006Date of Patent: February 1, 2011Assignee: Tesco CorporationInventor: Maurice W. Patent number: 6296054Abstract: A seal element is provided which comprises inner and outer, concentric, radially spaced apart, tubular helical cages. Each cage is formed by a plurality of helically parallel steel coils joined at their upper and lower ends by integral sleeves. A nitrite bladder is positioned between the cages. The seal element can be expanded by supporting its base and applying compressive load.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 2000Date of Patent: October 2, 2001Inventors: Dale I. Kunz, Maurice W. Patent number: 4870866Abstract: A method is provided for directly measuring the contact pressure on the mating interfaces of two solids undergoing compression where the interfacial region contains an entrapped film of liquid. An acoustic pulse is directed at either interface. A reference amplitude of the acoustic pulse reflected from the interface is measured as it bears initial contact pressure. A second "loaded" amplitude of the acoustic pulse reflected from the interface is measured when the interface is bearing a different contact pressure. A measure indicative of the change in contact pressure is computed from the ratio of the reference and loaded amplitude measurements by correlation with a calibration curve.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1987Date of Patent: October 3, 1989Assignee: Centre for Frontier Engineering ResearchInventor: Maurice W.
