Abstract: Composition useful for molding into articles such as food containers, beverage bottles, cured structural plastics and the like comprising molding grade linear or unsaturated polyester or polycarbonate (a) containing a mono-4-acryloxystyryl or bis-4-acyloxystyryl compound or (b) having reacted therewith or copolymerized therein a styryl residue derived from a mono-4-acryloxystyryl or bis-4-acyloxystyryl compound, having the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 represent the acyl radical and the other radicals are as defined in the specification.Preferred compositions comprise a linear polyester containing a styryl residue as an integral part of the polymer chain. The styryl residues absorb ultraviolet radiation in the range of about 250 to about 390 nm. The residues are non-extractable from the polymer and stable at the conditions at which the polymers are manufactured and processed.

Abstract: Disclosed are colored compositions useful for molding into articles such as food containers, beverage bottles, cured structural plastics and the like comprising condensation polymer having reacted therewith or copolymerized therein a coloring amount of the residue of a colorant compound having the formula; ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is ##STR2## carbonyl halide or an unsubstituted or substituted carbocyclic or hetrocyclic aryl radical;R.sup.2 is hydrogen or an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl or acyl radical;R.sup.3 is any of the substituents which R.sup.1 may represent; andA.sup.1 and A.sup.2 each is the residue of a fused benzene ring; whereinR.sup.4 is hydrogen, allyl or an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical; andR.sup.5 is hydrogen or an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical; provided the colorant compound bears at least one substituent that is reactive with one of the monomers from which the condensation polymer is derived.

Abstract: Water-dispersible polymeric material such as polyesters and poly(ester-amides) containing water-solubilizing sulfonate groups and having reacted onto or into the polymer backbone from about 0.01 to about 40 mol % based on the total of all reactant hydroxy, carboxy or amino equivalents, of colorant comprising one or more heat stable organic compounds initially having one or more condensable groups, the polymeric material comprising the reaction residues of organic monomers and said colorant compounds containing one or more reactive groups condensable under polymerization conditions. This material is useful, for example, for printing inks or other coatings which are desireably applied from an aqueous system.

Abstract: Condensation polymers including linear polyester, unsaturated polyester, and polycarbonate types, wherein certain 3H-dibenzo-[f,ij] isoquinoline-2,7-dione colorants are copolymerized (condensed) into the polymer to impart a wide range of colors from yellow to blue thereto. Abstract: Compositions comprising polyester or polycarbonate having reacted therein a total of from about 1.0 to about 5,000 parts by weight per million parts by weight of polyester of at least one UV absorbing compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is alkyl or the like, X is carbonyl or sulfonyl, R.sup.1 is hydrogen or a substituent, and Y and Z are hydrogen or substituents such as cyano or alkoxycarbonyl, with the provision that at least one of R, R.sup.1, Y, and Z is, or forms part of, or contains one or more reactive groups capable of undergoing a condensation reaction under polyester forming conditions, such that the UV absorbing compound is reacted into the polymer. The compound has a maximum light absorbance within the range of from about 320 nm to about 380 nm, which is nonextractable from the polyester and stable under the polyester processing conditions, for imparting UV screening properties to the polymer.

Abstract: This invention relates to novel azo dyes containing a 4-nitropyrazole azo moiety which may be substituted, for example, with an alkyl group which itself may be substituted, and an aniline coupler which may be substituted. The dyes produce bright red shades on hydrophobic textile fiber including polyesters, polyamides, and cellulose esters and show unexpected improvements in one or more of such properties as fastness to light, wash, ozone, gas such as oxides of nitrogen, perspiration, crock and sublimation, dyeability at desirable low energy levels to deep shades, build, pH stability, bloom resistance, leveling, migration, dye bath exhaustion, dye transfer, and the like.

Abstract: Polyester compositions useful in formed articles such as beverage bottles and having condensation reacted therein at least one UV-absorbing compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein: R is hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, cycloalkyl, substituted cycloalkyl, or alkenyl;R.sup.1 is hydrogen, or alkyl, aryl, or cycloalkyl, all of which may be substituted;R.sup.2 is hydrogen, or alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, all of which may be substituted;R.sup.3 is hydrogen or 1-3 substituents; andP is cyano or a group such as carbamoyl, aryl, alkylsulfonyl, arylsulfonyl, alkanoyl or aroyl, all of which groups may be substituted;whereby the polyester composition has maximum light radiation absorbance within the range of from about 320 nm to about 380 nm.

Abstract: Molding or fiber grade condensation polymer having copolymerized therein a total of from 1.0 to about 5,000 ppm of at least one methine moiety having one or more methine units defined as "the group >C.dbd.C< conjoined with a conjugated aromatic system," said moiety absorbing in the range of from about 350 nm to about 650 nm, and being nonextractable from said polymer and stable under the polymer processing conditions. The moieties preferably have molecular weights of from about 200 to about 600 although lower and higher molecular weights are also operable and are derived from reactants (monomers) having one or more groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, carboxylic ester, acid halide, amino and the like which condense during condensation or polycondensation to enter the moiety into the polymer chain.

Abstract: Yellow dyes from substituted 2-aminothiophene and acyclic active methylene coupling components are of particular interest for dyeing polyester fibers. The dyes have the formula: ##STR1## wherein: X is a group such as alkyl, allyloxy, alkoxy, aryl or the like; Y is hydrogen, alkyl, or aryl; Z is alkyl, aryl, alkylsulfonyl, cyano or COX where X is defined above; R is cyano, carbamyl, alkanoyl, aroyl, or the like; R.sub.1 is selected from the R groups and ##STR2## wherein R.sub.2 represents the atoms necessary to complete an azole radial selected from benzothiazole, benzimidazole, benzoxazole, 1,3,4-oxadiazole, 1,3,4-thiadiazole, and pyrazole; and wherein the hydrocarbon moieties of each of the above radicals or groups may be substituted with up to three of --OH, alkoxy, hydroxyalkoxy, alkylcarbamyl, or the like.
