  • Patent number: 4102893
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of color formers comprising reaction of 2 moles of an indole in the presence of a condensation agent with about 1 mole of an anhydride of the formula ##STR1## wherein A is the residue of a benzene or naphthalene or of a heterocyclic ring, the new color formers obtained by reacting 2 moles of an indole with a halogen- or nitro-substituted phthalic anhydride, or the anhydride of a vicinal naphthalene pyridine or quinoline dicarboxylic acid, the new 3,3-bis-(indol-3-yl)-phthalides substituted at the nitrogen atom with aralkyl or alkyl with 6 to 18 carbon atoms or alkenyl radicals with 3 to 18 carbon atoms or substituted alkyl or alkylene groups with 1 to 18 and 3 to 18 carbon atoms respectively and pressure sensitive recording paper containing at least one of the new color formers.
    Type: Grant

    Assignee: Ciba-Geigy AG
    Inventors: Robert Garner, Max Dunnenberger
  • Patent number: 4025556
Abstract: The present invention is concerned with quaternary ammonium-hydroxyaryl compounds of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 represents an aliphatic residue of high molecular weight, R.sub.2 a monocyclic benzene residue, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 each represents a short-chain divalent aliphatic residue and A an aromatic residue which contains at most 2-six-membered rings and is linked through a cyclic carbon atom with the oxygen atom. The new compounds are useful for controlling harmful microorganisms.

    Inventors: Max Schellenbaum, Max Dunnenberger
  • Patent number: 4022802
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of N-substituted indoles, wherein an indole is treated with a base in dimethyl sulphoxide, or in a dipolar aprotic solvent with a tertiary acid amide group, such as dimethyl formamide, and subsequently reacted with an alkylating or aralkylating agent and the new indoles carrying in the 1-position an alkyl radical with at least 6 carbon atoms or an alkenyl radical with at least 3 carbon atoms, or an alkyl or alkenyl radical which is substituted with halogen, a hydroxy, cyano, carboxy, lower alkoxy, alkylamino or alkoxycarbonyl group.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 12, 1975
Date of Patent: May 10, 1977
    Assignee: Ciba-Geigy AG
    Inventors: Robert Garner, Max Dunnenberger
  • Patent number: 4003875
Abstract: The invention concerns specific new oxalic acid diarylamides which are characterized by an asymmetrical substitution with regard to the central oxalic amide moiety of the formula--NH--CO--CO--NH--and by substitution with one or two alkoxy, alkenyloxy, aralkenyloxy or acyloxy groups. Definite additional substituents may be present. The compounds are valuable ultraviolet stabilizers.

    Assignee: Ciba-Geigy Corporation
Inventors: Christian Luthi, Max Dunnenberger, Hans Rudolf Biland
  • Patent number: 3993779
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for combating harmful microorganisms, which comprises applying to a desired site an effective amount of 2-hydroxy-benzophenone of the formula ##SPC1##Wherein Z.sub.1 denotes halogen or alkyl, X.sub.1 and Y.sub.1 each denote hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, benzene or substituted benzene, X.sub.2, X.sub.3, X.sub.4, Y.sub.2 and Y.sub.3 each denote hydrogen, halogen or alkyl and X.sub.5 denotes hydrogen or halogen, with the number of the alkyl, benzene and cyclohexyl radicals as substituents being together at most 4. The anti-bacterial range of these 2-hydroxy benzophenones extends both to gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
