  • Publication number: 20140077500
Abstract: A new method for converting the kinetic energy of wind and water flows into electric energy, comprising oscillating-wing power generators with vertical wings or blades mounted on essentially horizontal wings that are attached elastically to a rigid surface so that the essentially horizontal wings can be excited into flapping oscillations by means of a suitable mechanism.
    Type: Application
    Filed: September 24, 2011
    Publication date: March 20, 2014
Inventors: Maximilian F. Platzer, Nesrin Sarigul-Klijn
  • Publication number: 20090121490
Abstract: A new method for converting the kinetic energy of wind or water flows into electric energy, comprising wings or sails which are mounted on swing arms or on guide rails in such a way that the air or water flow induces an oscillatory wing or sail motion with a phase angle between the wing's or sail's pitch and plunge motion of about ninety degrees. Stroke reversal of the oscillatory motion is initiated by a purely aerodynamic/hydrodynamic mechanism such that the air or water flow induces a pitching moment on the wing or sail which rotates the wing or sail and thereby reverses the lift acting on the wing or sail.

  • Patent number: 5975462
Abstract: A new method for boundary layer energization and boundary layer propulsion or use on vehicles moving through fluids, which comprises mounting small airfoils parallel or perpendicular to the vehicle's surface, said airfoils being embedded within the said vehicle's boundary layer and juxtaposed the surface of said vehicle, said airfoils being approximately the height of the boundary layer thickness and exciting said airfoils into flapping oscillation parallel to the chord plane of said airfoils, said oscillation at a frequency up to 100 cycles per second at an amplitude up to 20 percent of the chord length of said airfoil, whereby flow separation is delayed or suppressed which enables the redesign of said vehicle.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 27, 1998
Date of Patent: November 2, 1999
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Navy
    Inventor: Maximilian F. Platzer
  • Patent number: 4413782
Abstract: To achieve rapid mixing between a jet flow and its surrounding medium a v is mounted in the jet downstream of the jet nozzle exit. The vane is oscillated in either pitch or plunge by an appropriate excitation mechanism at a constant frequency. The amplitude of oscillation is typically only a few degrees. The oscillation frequency may be varied to control the entrainment rate.
