Abstract: A network system is configured to manage and facilitate a multimodal network-based service. A user can interact with a user application executing on a user device to submit a service request to the network system. The network-based service can operate in a plurality of modes of operation, including at least a first mode in which individual entities manage the delivery of items and a second mode in which the network system manages the delivery of items. The network system can determine to dynamically modify the mode of operation for an individual service request.
