    Abstract: A flame resistant polymer composition comprising a mineral blend melt-mixed into a polymer matrix is described. The mineral blend comprises an alkaline earth carbonate, kaolin, and magnesium hydroxide. The polymer matrix may comprise ethylene-vinyl acetate and polyethylene, and dicumyl peroxide may also be added. The flame resistant polymer composition shows a UL94 flammability rating of V-0 or V-1, without containing halogens or aluminum hydroxide. The flame resistant polymer composition may be suitable as a wire coating, or for passive fire resistance in vehicles and buildings.

    Abstract: A reinforced resin composition may include a polycarbonate, a functionalizing agent, and an inorganic filler that has been functionalized with the functionalizing agent, the functionalized inorganic filler being present in an amount ranging from 1 to 25 percent by weight of the resin composition. The reinforced resin may exhibit a melt flow index of 25 or less, when measured at a load of 1.2 kg, after allowing the resin to remain at a temperature of 300° C. for 10 minutes. A method of reducing thermal degradation of a reinforced polycarbonate material may include introducing into said polycarbonate material at least one inorganic filler functionalized with a functionalizing agent, such that the reinforced resin exhibits a melt flow index of 25 or less, when measured at a load of 1.2 kg, after allowing the resin to remain at a temperature of 300° C. for 10 minutes.

    Abstract: Thermoplastic compounds are disclosed having functional filler of fly ash particles coupled to the thermoplastic resin via a coupling agent. A coupling agent of functional silane grafts on a backbone of the same polymer or a compatible polymer as the thermoplastic resin causes interaction of the fly ash particles with the thermoplastic resin to enhance physical properties, particularly Notched Izod impact resistance at room temperature and at ?40° C. The coupling interface between the fly ash particle and the coupling agent and the thermoplastic resin is so strong that there can be cohesive failure of the fly ash particle before there is adhesive failure of the fly ash particle from the coupling agent in the thermoplastic resin.
