A method for operating a user equipment (UE) includes receiving one or more first transmission configuration indicator (TCI) states for reception and transmission of downlink (DL) channels and uplink (UL) channels, respectively; receiving one or more TCI state identifiers (IDs); and transmitting an acknowledgement in response to the reception of the one or more TCI state IDs. The method further includes, based on the acknowledgement: determining, based on the one or more TCI state IDs, one or more second TCI states; determining a time to apply the one or more second TCI states; and updating one or more spatial filters based on the one or more second TCI states. The method further includes receiving and transmitting data on the DL channel and UL channels, respectively, using the one or more spatial filters starting at the determined time.
