  • Publication number: 20080126860
Abstract: A printing system includes a plurality of print media processing modules which transfer print media therebetween during printing and a fault management agent associated with each of the modules for acquiring fault-related data from the respective processing module. A fault management system is in communication with the fault management agents and receives fault-related data from the fault management agents. The fault management system processes the fault related data to identify faults in the system, such as when a first of the processing modules is a cause of fault-related data acquired in a second of the processing modules. When a fault is identified, a reconfiguration agent may reconfigure the printing system to mitigate an impact of at least one of the identified faults.

  • Publication number: 20060071963
Abstract: A system that extends the operational effectiveness of an image reproduction machine without requiring downtime for service by personnel includes a detection subsystem that monitors components of an image reproduction system for detecting a banding defect in the image reproduction system and an automated compensation subsystem for modifying operation of the image reproduction system to compensate for the detected banding defect so that the image reproduction system continues to generate images at an acceptable quality level. The automated compensation subsystem adjusts components and/or data used by image reproduction system to compensate for the identified banding defect without requiring immediate operator or service personnel intervention. This compensation may successfully attenuate the banding defect so that the image reproduction system continues to produce acceptable images without downtime while awaiting service by personnel.

  • Publication number: 20050286742
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a system and method for test target selection in conjunction with dynamic test pattern generation. In the invention, a test pattern page(s) is composed using an optimal set of test targets, which can be accommodated or adjusted to fit within size constraints of the test pattern. The method of the present invention makes use of layout optimization to ensure that related and optimized test targets are accommodated on a single test pattern. For example, it may be preferable to “squeeze in” a smaller-than-normal uniform area target, rather than not to print it at all during a test.

  • Patent number: 6892317
Abstract: By using monitoring data, feedback data, and pooling of failure data from a plurality of electronic devices, real-time failure prediction and diagnoses of electronic systems operating in a network environment can be achieved. First, the diagnostic system requests data on the state of a machine and/or its components and collections thereof as part of the machine's normal operation. Secondly, real-time processing of the data either at the machine site or elsewhere in the distributed network allows for predicting or diagnosing system failures. Having determined and/or predicted a system failure, a communication to one or more remote observers in the network allows the remote observers to view the diagnostic information and/or required action to repair the failure.

  • Patent number: 6862414
Abstract: Using a system of computer modules operatively associated with a document processing machine, banding defect analysis is accomplished by analyzing specific test patterns via image processing. The banding defects are characterized in terms of quantitative parameters based on an analysis of the banding defect. Key features are extracted from the banding defect parameters. The key features are analyzed in a diagnostic engine, to determine the possible source of the defect. The identified source is correlated to a recommended repair service procedure. The diagnostic process may be augmented by also including machine data in the analysis.

  • Patent number: 6665425
Abstract: During the operation of a document processing system machine and job data are collected from a document processing system. Optionally, machine information, both for the specific machine and population based data are acquired from a database or server. Having accumulated the job data and machine data, the diagnostic inference engine performs an analysis to determine the initial diagnosis of the document processing system. After obtaining the initial diagnosis, the system determines the test patterns to be printed and the image quality tests to be performed. The system then prints test patterns, and scans the patterns to determine image quality parameters and/or to automatically identify image defects. Optionally, image defect information may also be provided by the customer or the service engineer via a user interface. Next, a diagnostic inference engine uses the results of the image quality analysis to refine the initial diagnosis.

  • Patent number: 6519552
Abstract: Through a combination of a hybrid diagnostic scheme based on qualitative and quantitative technologies, at least component level status information can be obtained about a machine, such as an electronic device. In particular, qualitative model based diagnostic technologies is used in conjunction with quantitative analysis techniques and signature analysis to achieve accurate and reliable diagnosis of components and systems down to the individual component level, for example, down to the consumer replaceable unit level. Thus, the hybrid diagnostic methodology exploits the diagnostic information content in already available system signals via intelligent processing and allows for diagnosis with minimal sensor requirements. Furthermore, the diagnostic methodology allows for a self-diagnosing machine having diagnostic intelligence which in turn can reduce service time, service costs, increased machine up time and improve customer satisfaction.
