  • Publication number: 20240075906
Abstract: A method for repairing small surface imperfections on a vehicle body is provided that includes the application of an uncured layer to a thickness of up to 1.02 mm of a composition inclusive of a polyester resin, an acrylated urethane resin, a defoamer, and a particulate filler to the vehicle body or a cured putty thereon. The uncured layer is then exposed to actinic radiation to induce cure of the uncured layer to form a coating to fill the small surface imperfection on the vehicle body. A one component, UV-cured putty material for repairing small surface imperfections is also provides inclusive of a polyester resin, an acrylated urethane oligomer or polymer, a defoamer, a photoinitiator, and a particulate filler. The composition has an uncured viscosity of between 9,000 and 13,000 centiPoise.

  • Publication number: 20240075498
Abstract: A method for repairing surface imperfections on a vehicle body includes the application of an uncured layer to a thickness of up to 0.254 mm of a primer composition comprising: a polyester resin, an acrylated urethane resin, a crosslinking agent, a solvent, and a particulate filler to the vehicle body. The uncured layer is exposed to actinic radiation to induce cure of the uncured layer to form a coating to fill the surface imperfection on the vehicle body. A surface coating primer composition is also provided that includes a polyester resin; an acrylated urethane oligomer or polymer; a crosslinking agent; a solvent; a photoinitiator; and a particulate filler. The uncured composition has a viscosity of between 100 and 800 centipoise.

  • Patent number: 11898062
Abstract: A method of repairing a surface defect with a patch is provided. A fibrous substrate is impregnated with a formulation that includes a polyester resin, a crosslinking agent, a solvent, and a particulate filler. The fibrous substrate is contacted with the surface defect. The formulation is exposed to actinic radiation to induce cure of the formulation to form the patch to repair the surface defect. A kit is also provided that includes a bottle containing the formulation. A sheet of fibrous support material is also provided that is adapted to receive the formulation therethrough. Instructions for repairing a surface defect by the aforementioned method are also provided as part of the kit. 3D printing of an article to fit in the surface defect is also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20220073764
Abstract: A method of sealing surface imperfections on a sanded surface of a repair to a vehicle body is provided that includes an uncured layer of a formulation being applied to sanded cured body filler on the vehicle body. The formulation includes a polyester resin, a crosslinking agent, a solvent, and a particulate filler. The uncured layer is exposed to actinic radiation to induce cure of the uncured layer to form a sealing coating. The resulting seal coating has able to seal surface imperfections. A surface imperfection sealing formulation is also provided that includes a polyester resin and a multifunctional crosslinking agent. A solvent is provided. A photoinitiator renders the formulation curable upon exposure to ultraviolet light exposure. A particulate filler is also present in an amount to result in a formulation with an uncured viscosity of between 2600 and 3000 centipoises.

  • Publication number: 20210179887
Abstract: A composition is provided that includes aliphatic urethane acrylate; a multifunctional crosslinking agent; photoinitiator; a chemical initiator system of a peroxide or azo group containing catalyst, and a cure promoter; and a particulate filler. The composition is amenable to rapid cure to a sandable condition as compared to conventional products. By adjusting the amount of particulate filler present, a product is provided that operates as a primer, a putty, or a filler. A method of vehicle body repair includes the application of an uncured layer of the composition to the vehicle body. The uncured layer is exposed to UV radiation to induce cure of the uncured layer to form a coating in a time of between 2 and 20 minutes even with an ultraviolet wavelength emitting light emitting diode (UV LED).
