  • Patent number: 10522184
Abstract: Bottom tracks are written to a recording medium using a first setting of a spin-torque oscillator of a single microwave assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) head. Top tracks are written interlaced between and partially overlapping the bottom tracks using the single MAMR head at a second setting of the MAMR head, the first and second settings resulting in different bit aspect ratios for the top and bottom tracks.

  • Patent number: 10332547
Abstract: A first reader spans first and second tracks of a recording medium and provides a first signal responsive to a first total longitudinal field of the first and second tracks. A second read spans two other tracks, at least one of the two other tracks being different from the first and second tracks. The second reader provides a second signal responsive to a second total longitudinal field of the two other tracks. A third reader spans two or more of the tracks and provides a third signal responsive to a total perpendicular field of the two or more tracks. User data is decoded from the first, second, and third signals.

  • Patent number: 10157631
Abstract: A slider includes an array of two or more transducer sets offset from one another in a cross-track direction. Each transducer set includes at least one writer and at least one reader. All of the transducer sets are configured to operate simultaneously to perform any combination of reading and writing on two or more tracks of a recording medium. At least one actuator is included between two the transducer sets. The actuator is configured to adjust a cross-track spacing between the two transducer sets in response to a control current.

  • Patent number: 6707624
Abstract: A method of preprocessing low frequency components of a perpendicular read-back signal in a data storage system in order to reduce low frequency noise includes introducing a dominant known perturbation, to the perpendicular read-back signal, which masks the effects of other low frequency noise sources and leaves the read-back signal with one dominant low frequency noise component. The method then further includes removing the dominant known perturbation from the read-back signal to recover low frequency portions of the read-back signal in order to determine values of bits read from a storage medium. A perpendicular recording data storage system configured to implement the method is also disclosed.
