  • Patent number: 8513467
Abstract: Described is a method of making 2,4-diones via acid catalyzed or thermally induced ring-opening of a 4-hydroxy-6-substituted-2-pyrone to yield a 2,4-dione.

  • Patent number: 8404890
Abstract: Described is a method of making sorbic acid, pentadiene, or 3-penten-2-one. The method includes partially hydrogenating 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-2-pyrone (HMP) to yield 5,6-dihydro-4-hydroxy-6-methyl-2H-pyran-2-one (4-DHMMP). Then, if 3-penten-2-one is desired, thermally decomposing the 4-DHMMP to yield 3-penten-2-one. If sorbic acid or pentadiene are desired, the 4-DHMMP is hydrogenated to yield 4-hydroxy-6-methyltetrahydro-2-pyrone (4-HMTHP). The 4-HMTHP is then dehydrated by contacting it with a solid acid catalyst to yield parasorbic acid (PSA). The PSA can then be ring-opened by contacting it with a solid acid catalyst. The reaction conditions of the ring-opening reaction can be controlled to yield sorbic acid and/or pentadiene.

  • Patent number: 8389749
Abstract: Described is a catalytic process for converting biomass to furan derivatives (e.g., furfural, furfuryl alcohol, etc.) using a biphasic reactor containing a reactive aqueous phase and an organic extracting phase containing an alkylphenol. The process provides a cost-effective route for producing furfural, furfuryl alcohol, levulinic acid hydroxymethylfurfural, ?-valerolactone, and the like. The products formed are useful as value-added intermediates to produce polymers, as precursors to diesel fuel, and as fuel additives.

  • Patent number: 6422895
Abstract: A receptacle for receiving telephone plug and wide-band cable plug includes a body with a terminal having at least 8 pins connected to the body and an inlet defined in the body. A first recess and a second recess are respectively defined in the body so as to respectively receive a first checking member and a second checking member. The first checking member has a first contact portion and the second checking member has a second contact portion which extends in the inlet so that when a smaller telephone line plug is inserted in the inlet, the second contact portion is not pushed, and the second contact portion is pushed to contact the first contact portion when a lager wide-band cable plug is inserted in the inlet.

  • Patent number: 6364694
Abstract: A socket has a body, an enlarged pin, a detecting pin and multiple contact pins. The enlarged pin and the detecting pin are separately secured in the body. The contact pins are secured in the cavity of the body in a row between the enlarged pin and the detecting pin. The enlarged pin is longer than each contact pin so that an enlarged section is formed on the enlarged pin. A lateral rod is formed on the detecting pin and extends to a position below the enlarge section of the enlarged pin. Consequently, the socket can automatically indicate whether a plug inserted into the socket is a cable plug or a telephone plug. The socket can be used with different types of modular communications plugs. The cost for manufacturing the computer or a modem that can accommodate different transmission media is reduced.
