The steps in the process of the present invention comprises: isolating a biomass from a fermented broth; treating the isolated biomass with alcohol; extracting the lycopene from the alcohol treated biomass with an organic solvent; removing the solid phase from the biomass/solvent extracting mixture; filtering the liquid-phase extract; crystallizing the lycopene by concentrating the liquid-phase extract; separating the dark red lycopene crystals; re-suspending the separated dark red lycopene crystals with acetone; and separating and drying the washed lycopene crystals.
