  • Patent number: 5488827
Abstract: An apparatus and method for establishing parallel flow to and from a plurality of turbochargers operating in parallel. The turbochargers are mounted on a manifold that has a high pressure chamber and a low pressure chamber. A plurality of turbines are mounted to the manifold so that each turbine inlet is in communication with the high pressure chamber and each turbine outlet is in communication with the low pressure chamber. Each turbine inlet is sized, shaped and positioned to accommodate a designed proportional mass flow rate to each corresponding turbine. A programmed logic controller and suitable control valve can be used to bypass a portion of the engine exhaust gas from the high pressure chamber directly to the low pressure chamber. The amount of bypassed engine exhaust gas can be controlled to vary the power output of turbines.

  • Patent number: 4955326
Abstract: A dual fuel engine system and method of operating the engine reduces emission rates of polutants. The dual fuel engine includes a fuel oil supply connected to the engine and a fuel gas supply connected to the engine. Means connected between the fuel oil supply and the engine inject low levels of diesel fuel into the engine. In particular, the injection of diesel fuel is limited to pilot injection quantities only. The exhaust emission of NOx is maintained at less than 1 GM/HP-HR, where natural gas is used as the primary fuel, and less than 0.5 GM/HP-HR where digester gas is used as the primary fuel.

  • Patent number: 4306526
Abstract: A method of combusting natural gas fuel in a two cycle, turbocharged internal combustion engine substantially reduces the production of nitrogen-oxygen emissions. An improved turbocharger design provides increased air charging pressure, produces a controlled lean air/fuel mixture and lowers peak combustion temperatures. A jet cell ignition device ensures uniform, reliable ignition of the lean air/fuel mixture under all operating conditions and the lean air/fuel mixture in turn encourages complete fuel combustion and provides excellent combustion characteristics with methane, ethane and heavier paraffinic hydrocarbon fuels. These structural modifications and adjustment of other operating parameters combine to reduce nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO.sub.2) emissions by as much as 75% while effecting only a negligible increase in fuel consumption.
