Publication number: 20240260788Abstract: A container assembly has a soft-sided insulated wall structure. It has an internal chamber in which to place objects, such as foodstuffs, to be kept cool or warm. There is a first closure member that opens and closes to permit objects to be place in, or removed from, the chamber. The wall structure includes one or more accommodations in which to place a warming or cooling element, such as an ice pack. The accommodations are externally accessible without opening the main chamber, and have their own closure. The outside of the accommodation may be insulated; the inside is a thin web through which to transfer heat. The container may be a collapsible foldable bag; a tote bag; back pack or a non-collapsible lunch box. The thermal storage elements may have a flat disk shape. The external access for the thermal storage elements permits them to slide sideways into place.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 19, 2024Publication date: August 8, 2024Inventors: Melvin S. MOGIL, William KEARNS, Richard C. STEPHENS, Christopher EDWARDS, Elizabeth MITCHELL

Publication number: 20220110423Abstract: A soft-side container is sized to fit inside larger luggage such as a suitcase. It has a peripheral zipper that aids in compressing the contents of the container when it is loaded, such as with clothing, thereby tending to take less space in the suitcase. It also has a suspension system permitting the container to be hung from a hanger rod, or from another container of the same type, in a cascade of shelves. To aid in this function, the container has an expanding side wall, and also a form-preserving spreader that tends to cause the container to hold itself in a generally planar configuration to function more effectively as a shelf.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 14, 2021Publication date: April 14, 2022Inventors: Rebecca Rodgers, Melvin S. Mogil, Jigchao Wu, Richard C. Stevens

Patent number: 10098427Abstract: A soft-sided insulated container assembly is made of a flexible wall structure that is movable between a collapsed position and a deployed position. In one variation of the deployed position it resembles a tote-bag; in another variation of folding the deployed position corresponds to a generally box-like shape. The container includes a self-inflating wall structure that has an inner layer or skin, an outer layer or skin, and a resilient, open-cell insulating layer trapped between the two skins. A valve governs the ability to take in or to expel air. The outer layer may be thicker and more robust that the inner layer, the better to resist abrasion or punctures. The inner layer may be reflective. There may be a removable internal liner. That liner may be transparent.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 2016Date of Patent: October 16, 2018Assignee: CALIFORNIA INNOVATIONS INC.Inventors: Melvin S. Mogil, Rick Stephens, Ryan Mather

Patent number: 8899071Abstract: A soft sided insulated container assembly includes a first portion having an insulated, soft sided external wall structure, and an internal, substantially rigid molded plastic receptacle mounted therein. It has a cover structure that includes a reinforcement member for engaging a land region of the molded receptacle, thereby tending to yield an interface tending to have a sealing relationship. Both the receptacle and the engaging seal member of the lid may be outwardly splayed. The container may also include a thermal storage element, and the container may have an accommodation for receiving the thermal storage element.Type: GrantFiled: November 16, 2009Date of Patent: December 2, 2014Assignee: California Innovations Inc.Inventors: Melvin S. Mogil, Mark J. Greenstein, Michael Ramundi, Andrius S. Birutis

Patent number: 8857654Abstract: A soft-sided insulated container assembly with a removable thermal storage member mounted therein. The container has a first portion and a second portion. The first portion forms a body and the second portion forms a lid movable between a first position obstructing access to a chamber defined in the first portion and a second position permitting access. The lid has a structural frame having members defining a seat for the thermal storage member when the lid is in the first position. The storage member has portions operable matingly to engage the frame members.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 2011Date of Patent: October 14, 2014Assignee: California Innovations Inc.Inventors: Melvin S. Patent number: 8646970Abstract: A soft sided insulated container assembly has a first insulated container portion and a second insulated container portion. The second insulated container portion can be collapsed to a flat position, and secured in place. Either of the container portions may have a liner. The liner in the first container portion may be a substantially rigid liner. The assembly may have a lifting member. In one example the second portion may be hingedly mounted to the first portion, and the lifting member may be mounted such that when the assembly is lifted, the hinge is in an up-and-down orientation. In another embodiment, the lifting member may be eccentrically mounted, such that the assembly may possibly sit more comfortably against a carrier's hip. The first container portion may have an auxiliary opening or door, and that door may be more easily opened than the main access of the first insulated container portion.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 2013Date of Patent: February 11, 2014Assignee: California Innovations Inc.Inventor: Melvin S.
