  • Patent number: 3971037
Abstract: A digital data storage element using magnetic bubbles, or small cylindrical magnetic domains formed in a thin film of magnetic material, in which binary information is stored by providing two alternative positions for a magnetic bubble, a pattern of high permeability magnetic material being provided adjacent to the surface of the film to constrain the bubble to lie in any one of the two positions. Information can be transferred from one storage element to another by the mutual repulsion effect of the magnetic bubbles. Shifting registers using two storage elements per bit are described using the mutual repulsion effect of the bubbles to effect data transfer along the register. The use of a small field pulsed with microsecond pulses superimposed on a steady field is described for encouraging the generation of bubbles.
