The PHB, speakerphone console, or combination thereof also performs a check-in process including: detecting (50) a check-in time and outputting (52) a request to perform a check-in action and detecting (54) whether the check-in action is performed. The check-in action is logged (56) if it is detected. A remedial action (60, 62, 64, 66, 68, 70, 72) is performed if the check-in action is not detected. The check-in action may be a designated motion of the PHB detected by gesture recognition algorithm performed by the PHB that analyzes sensor data generated by a motion sensor (22) of the PHB.

The determining may include determining an orientation change of the PHB since the last check time. Alternatively, compliance may be monitored by detecting and logging wake-up interrupt events that cause the motion sensor to switch from a low-power mode to an operational mode.

On exiting the software program, the user can return the license, making it immediately available to another user, or can keep the license for later use. A user is able to obtain a license while coupled to a network but is able to advantageously continue using the software program while disconnected from the network.

Preferably, telecommunication services and equipment are provisioned through a network by classifying the orders to be provisioned as two types. When the order is of a first type, the provisioning processes are performed on a set of servers (shared), and when the order is of a second type, substantially all of the provisioning processes are performed on a single server.

The unit includes microprocessor-based circuitry including an internal clock and data storage for containing control and message information. Data storage can be via a digital storage chip such as an EPROM. The invention serves as an interactive attendant for the subscriber by which the subscriber can have an increased sense of security in the ability to summon help in the event of an emergency, and in being provided with timely reminders in the course of daily activities.
