    Abstract: A process for the preparation of a zinc-containing polymeric material which includes providing a divalent metal compound including zinc; a polyhydroxy compound; and a catalyst; mixing the divalent metal compound and the polyhydroxy compound in substantially stoichiometric amounts in the presence of the catalyst at a temperature sufficient to allow reaction therebetween; and isolating the polymeric material so formed.
