  • Patent number: 6807136
Abstract: A device for reading or writing on optical recording media with disk type recognition capability has an optical scanning device and a focus regulating circuit. The object of the invention is to provide a device of this type which can reliably recognize in a short time the type of the recording medium inserted into the device. Another object of the invention is to provide a corresponding process. These objects are attained in that the disk type recognition capability includes a mirror signal generator, a threshold value generator, a counter and an evaluation unit. The process is based on the utilization of a mirror-signal value of the device for disk type recognition.

  • Patent number: 6577572
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for the reproduction or recording of data or information with a photodetector and digital error signal and evaluation signal processing. The object of the invention is to provide an apparatus for the reproduction or recording of data or information which requires little outlay despite digital evaluation signal processing and a considerable capability of adaptation to different scanning speeds. The invention is based on the principle of enabling digital evaluation signal generation with an analog-to-digital converter known from audio technology, even though the data rate of the data or high-frequency signal requires an analog-to-digital converter for the radio-frequency or for the video signal band. An analog-to-digital converter for the audio frequency band can be used to generate a digital evaluation signal by the analog-to-digital converter having fed to it not the high-frequency signal directly but rather at least one envelope of the high-frequency signal.

  • Patent number: 6345297
Abstract: A network match making system and method is used to match users of a multi-users networked application. Each user is associated with a client computer connected to the network. Clients are selected based on attributes of their users, the clients, servers, and/or communication links. The network match maker works with three different forms of network applications: peer-to-peer, multiple clients to a single server, and multiple clients to multiple servers. In one match maker method, a client computer and one multi-user application server are matched. A list of multi-user application servers connected to the computer network that are available for a match is received. At least one communication attribute of respective data communication links between the client computer and a plurality of multi-application servers in the received list is measured. An additional attribute, such as a server attribute, is received from at least one of the plurality of multi-user application servers.
