  • Patent number: 5540286
Abstract: A lawn edger utilizes an engine with a vertical drive shaft. The edger includes a frame mounted on wheels. A handle extends upward from the frame for pushing the frame on the wheels. The engine mounts to the frame with its drive shaft extending vertically downward. A drive pulley mounts to the output shaft. The blade carrier locates at the forward end of the edger and carries a blade on a blade axle. The driven pulley mounts to the blade axle. A drive belt extends between the drive pulley and the driven pulley, twisting as it extends around the pulleys.

  • Patent number: 4790071
Abstract: A flexible line trimmer for cutting vegetation can be converted to a blade cutting device. The trimmer has a motor driven rotatable head with a cavity defined by a wall of the head. The cavity receives a spool wrapped with line. The line has a free end extending through an aperture in the wall of the head. Drive lugs located in the cavity couple the spool to the drive head for rotation. The blade carrier replaces the spool and line. The blade carrier has a central portion that locates within the cavity while the spool is removed. The central portion has at least one drive member that is positioned to engage the drive lugs to rotate the blade carrier with the head. A plurality of blades are mounted to the periphery of the carrier. The carrier is fastened to the head.

  • Patent number: 4756148
Abstract: A flexible nonmetallic line trimmer for cutting vegetation has a wheel support for edging operations. The trimmer has a safety guard that extends around the rearward portion of a motor housing. A sliding bracket is mounted to the safety guard. A wheel is mounted on the forward end of the sliding bracket. The bracket will slide between a retracted position with the wheel to one side of the housing to an extended position with the wheel in front of the housing to support the cutter.

  • Patent number: 4660286
Abstract: A line trimmer for cutting vegetation has features to enable automatic advancement of line increments while rotating. The trimmer has a housing with an aperture on its periphery. A spool coiled with a flexible cutting line is located in the housing. The free end of the line extends out the aperture into a cutting plane. A set of drive members are located in the housing near the center in a circular array. A drive link is carried in the housing radially outward from the drive members. The drive link will move into contact with the drive members to lock the spool and housing together for rotation. Increased centrifugal force urges the drive link outward, allowing the spool and housing to slip relative to each other to feed out additional line. Stop members are located on the inner side of the housing outer wall. These stop members stop further slippage and force the drive link back into engagement with the drive members.
