  • Patent number: 6759157
Abstract: Proton conducting membranes having improved resistance to methanol crossover are provided, along with methods for their manufacture. In a preferred embodiment, the polymeric membranes are formed by (a) dissolving a polymer, preferably a polyphosphazene, in an organic solvent to form a polymer solution; (b) adding an oxyacid to the polymer solution; (c) optionally, adding water to the polymer solution, preferably in a molar ratio equivalent to the oxyacid; (d) optionally, concentrating the polymer solution; (e) casting the polymer solution on a casting surface, such as one formed of or coated with TEFLON™; and (f) removing the organic solvent, so as to form the polymeric membrane. A particularly useful application for these polymeric membranes is in fuel cells, such as those wherein methanol and oxygen are converted into electrical energy.

  • Publication number: 20030057090
Abstract: A system for coating band-shaped material, where the band-shaped material travels through at least one process chamber in which there is a vacuum, and at least one cooling roller. On the peripheral surface of each cooling roller are at least two magnetron sputter sources that are arranged separate from one another in magnetron chambers, which are formed by separate magnetron chamber walls and allow each chamber to be evacuated, so the pressure in the magnetron chamber can be maintained higher than that in the process chamber. The magnetron chamber walls and the magnetron sputter sources can be mounted on a common carriage, which is displaceable parallel to the cooling roller axis. The result is the reduction in the maintenance costs in cleaning of the magnetron chamber walls and at the same time improvement of the separation of gas between the magnetron chambers and the process chamber.

  • Patent number: 5119201
Abstract: The invention relates to a line camera for imaging object strips on photosensitive detector lines, having an objective producing a line image of an object strip, having a ray deflecting system situated at the site of the line image by which the line image is divided into adjacent image sections, in such a manner that paths of the rays pertaining to adjacent image sections are deflected into respective different directions in space. One optical relay system respectively is optically arranged behind each image section for the imaging of the respective image section on its own respective detector line. The total number of optical relay systems is divided into at least two groups, each group being assigned to a different direction in space.

  • Patent number: 4095053
Abstract: In a digital communication system, synchronization of a plurality of asynchronous digital signals is usually achieved by stuffing one or more pulses in a pulse stream. Thereby, stuffing equalizes the input signal bit rate with the usually fixed bit rate of a signal on a transmission link. For example, in pulse stuffing, single pulses are added at certain allowed times to equalize the input bit rate with the transmission link bit rate. On the other hand, in block stuffing, a block of pulses is added. However, conventional block stuffing usually requires a narrowband phase-locked loop for removing jitter in the received signal. As a result, slower acquisition of synchronization occurs.

  • Patent number: 4002841
Abstract: A digital speech interpolation (DSI) system advantageously utilizes speech inactivity time to reduce the bit rate by compressing digital characters from a plurality of trunks onto a lesser plurality of channels. A signaling arrangement is typically employed therein to signal a receiver as to the activity of a trunk. If the number of active trunks exceeds the number of channels, an overload may exist. Known arrangements for mitigating overload typically include apparatus responsive to an activity signal for truncating one or more bits from the digital characters and for transmitting the truncated characters. Unfortunately, quantization noise is increased and digital precision decreased in such arrangements. The hereindisclosed system includes an improved automatically adaptive arrangement for advantageously incorporating nearly instantaneous companding (NIC) and priority trunk rotation in a plurality of frames, called a multiframe.
