  • Publication number: 20150176237
Abstract: A system and method is provided for determining curvature for subsea riser system, including but not limited to drilling risers, steel catenary risers, lazy-wave catenary risers and riser jumpers, comprising the steps of: periodically measuring acceleration in a first lateral direction at said vertical position to obtain a first acceleration timetrace processing said first acceleration timetrace to obtain a first acceleration spectra; applying a transfer function to said first acceleration spectra to obtain a first curvature spectra; and processing said first curvature spectra to obtain a first curvature timetrace. Preferably the transfer function is determined by a method comprising the step of modelling the riser as a Tensioned Timoshenko Beam. The curvature may be used to determine stress and fatigue damage in a structure from motions measured at a single location or a combination of motions measured at a single location with or without tension measurement.

  • Publication number: 20150107376
Abstract: Force and location sensing systems and methods are disclosed. A method comprises bending a L-beam at an initially unknown location on a force-supporting portion of the L-beam, the L-beam substantially having a tension side and a compression side, measuring a first local stress at a first location on the tension side, measuring a second local stress at a second location on the tension side, measuring a third local stress at a third location on the compression side, and measuring a fourth local stress at a fourth location on the compression side. A weight-sensing storage system capable of tracking removed items is disclosed with a product image captured via a camera, a plurality of sensors on an L-beam, a first signal from the plurality of sensors indicating a first state prior to change of the product image, and a second signal indicating lower strain on the L-beam than the first signal.

  • Publication number: 20150101195
Abstract: A shaving razor cartridge with a housing having a guard toward a front of the housing and a cap toward a rear of the housing. The cap has a crest. A leading blade is mounted to housing nearest the guard and a trailing blade mounted to the housing nearest the cap. Each blade has a blade edge. The blades define a blade plane tangent to the edge of the leading blade and the edge of the trailing blade. The cap having a cap span from the edge of the trailing blade to the crest and a cap height from the crest to the blade plane. A ratio of the cap span to the cap height is about 25:1 to about 70:1.

  • Patent number: 8972307
Abstract: A computationally efficient method and apparatus is disclosed for machine learning an unknown, n-dimensional ?-margin halfspace to accuracy 1?? in the presence of malicious noise, when the noise rate is allowed to be as high as ? ? ( ?? ? log ? ( 1 / ? ) ) . A smooth boosting module repeatedly calls a weak learner module that generates candidate classifiers based on a majority vote of randomly-generated classifiers.

  • Patent number: 8904597
Abstract: A protective bumper attaches to a caster wheel assembly and substantially surrounds the assembly to act as a point of contact with other objects or articles, in order to limit or prevent damage to struck objects, and/or to the caster wheel assembly, and/or to a movable object or article supported on the caster wheel assembly. The protective bumper includes an outer bumper portion and an inner frame portion that attaches to a frame of the caster wheel assembly. The bumper may be attached to the caster wheel assembly via an axle that rotatably couples a wheel to the frame of the wheel assembly. Optionally, the outer bumper portion may be fitted with a relatively soft annular outer member or surface.

  • Patent number: 8744981
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for machine learning an unknown n-dimensional ?-margin halfspace. The method and apparatus can be implemented using parallel processing. In one embodiment, the method includes generating a random d-dimensional projection of the set of examples. The random projection is generated by rounding the examples, taking a projection and then rounding the results. A set of m examples are drawn from the d-dimensional projection. Linear programs are then solved with m constraints based on the m examples using multiple stages of Newton's method. Parallel algorithms for linear algebra can be used to carry out at least some stages of Newton's method.

  • Patent number: 8727357
Abstract: A toolholder support member for retaining the shank of a toolholder has a bore to accept the toolholder shank. A retention member extends through the bore wall to engage a perforation extending through the shank or indentation within the shank, thereby retaining the shank within the receiving bore. The retention member is biased to provide resistance for insertion or extraction of the shank within the receiving bore. Furthermore, the retention bore is angled relative to the longitudinal axis of the receiving bore so that the force required to insert the toolholder within the receiving bore is minimized, while the force required to extract the toolholder from the receiving bore is maximized.
