Abstract: A method for modifying the operation of a device responsive to the detection of a remote device is provided. In the method, the remote device is detected, and communications with the remote device are established responsive to the detection of the remote device. A determination is made as to whether a feature of the device is affected by the establishment of communications with the remote device, and an action with respect to the feature of the device is initiated.

The gateway device includes a fetch and cache component, storage, and a wireless transport layer. The wireless transport layer delivers content from the gateway to the handheld viewing device. The user of the handheld device is then graphically presented with a representative form of the data and is thus able to manually select certain frames of data through a user interface.

Abstract: An investment casting system for producing a cast article from a reactive metal that is free of an undesirable surface layer generally associated with the reaction between the molten metal and the casting mold. In one form the casting mold is substantially free of silica. A silica free ceramic crucible for heating and holding molten reactive metal is also contemplated herein.

Abstract: A method and system for determining an automobile insurance rate for a person by measuring a person's ability to perform a task or series of tasks, wherein the measurement correlates to a risk of loss. After the identity of the person seeking insurance is challenged and verified, a user interface device, such as a kiosk or the user's computer, is used to render an interactive test that measures, for example, the person's dexterity and metal concentration. The test results are collected electronically and analyzed to provide one or more scores based on the abilities of the person to finish the test objectives. The score is used to derive a driving-abilities rate factor based on actuarial methodology and statistical data. The driving-abilities rate factor can then be used in combination with other underwriting factors to determine the automobile insurance rate for that person.

A second-order set of controller software instructions configured to interact with the second-order data object is also included in the software architecture.

Abstract: A method for transmitting data through an analogue channel from an analogue modem to a digital modem includes encoding data inputted to the analogue modem. An encoder encodes data inputted into the analogue modem into corresponding constellation points of a one-dimensional constellation. During initial handshaking a microprocessor in the digital modem computes the constellation points of the constellation so that mid points between adjacent constellation points coincide with mid points between adjacent codec levels. The computed constellation points of the constellation are transmitted along with the value of the largest constellation point and its corresponding codec level to the analogue modem. By selecting the mid points between the constellation points to correspond with mid points between adjacent codec levels the noise margin is significantly enhanced.

During initial handshaking a microprocessor (12) in the digital modem (3) computes the constellation points (9) of the constellation (8) so that mid points (15) between adjacent constellation points (9) coincide with mid points (14) between adjacent codec levels (10). The computed constellation points (9) of the constellation (8) are transmitted along with the value of the largest constellation point (9) and its corresponding codec level (10) to the analogue modem (2). By selecting the mid points (15) between the constellation points (9) to correspond with mid points (14) between adjacent codec levels (10) the noise margin is significantly enhanced.
