Patent number: 9857154Abstract: A munition having a warhead and an ogive coaxially rotatably mounted to the warhead. A controllable motor is mechanically coupled to the ogive to control the rotational position of the ogive relative to the warhead. The ogive includes an asymmetric surface while a windscreen is detachably connected to the ogive over the asymmetric surface so that, with the windscreen attached to the ogive, the outer surface of the ogive together with the windscreen are axisymmetric in shape. A detachment mechanism, when activated, detaches the windscreen from the ogive which permits steering of the munition by placement of the asymmetric surface relative to the warhead. The introduction of the asymmetric surface during flight produces an asymmetric pressure field resulting in a lateral force on the munition causing is to change direction.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 2014Date of Patent: January 2, 2018Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Michael A. Patent number: 9746298Abstract: A flechette for use with a gun barrel having a tapered bore with a diameter at the initial bore section greater than the diameter at the emergent bore. The flechette includes a body constructed of a ductile material and having an elongated axis aligned with the axis of the tapered bore when positioned in the load end of the bore. The body also includes a cylindrical bulkhead as well as a bourrelet that are axially spaced from each other along the flechette and have an outside diameter substantially the same as the diameter at the initial bore section of the tapered bore. An elongated boom is attached at the tail end of the body while a penetrator is attached at the forward end of the body. Upon launch, both the bulkhead and bourrelet are compressed radially inward by the bore reduction so that the body is substantially cylindrical upon exit from the discharge end of the bore.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 2014Date of Patent: August 29, 2017Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Michael A. Patent number: 9581402Abstract: A projectile for use with a tapered gun bore having a tapered bore section between the breech and the muzzle. The projectile includes an elongated body having a cylindrical bulkhead with a diameter substantially equal to the large caliber section of the gun bore. A tapered ogive extends from the bulkhead to a front end of the projectile while a tapered tail extends from a rear end of the projectile to the cylindrical bulkhead. A plurality of circumferentially spaced forward grooves extend forwardly from the bulkhead and to a point short of the front end while a plurality of circumferentially spaced rearward grooves extend rearwardly from said midsection and to a point short of a rear end of the body.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 2014Date of Patent: February 28, 2017Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Michael A. Publication number: 20160231094Abstract: A warhead which is adapted to be launched in a predetermined axial direction includes a support structure having a plurality of walls which extend in a direction parallel to the predetermined axial direction. The support structure forms a plurality of closed chambers which are laterally spaced apart from each other and are elongated in the axial direction. A high explosive is contained within the structure cavities.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 7, 2014Publication date: August 11, 2016Inventor: Michael A. Minnicino, II

Patent number: 9052173Abstract: A sabot petal having an axis parallel to or coinciding with the launch axis. The sabot petal is formed from a plurality of stacked sheets of composite material consisting of a fiber reinforcement and a polymer resin matrix. Each composite sheet is in a plane rotationally offset from the meridional plane which is defined by the launch axis and radial axis of the sabot petal's cylindrical coordinate system.Type: GrantFiled: January 27, 2014Date of Patent: June 9, 2015Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Michael A.
