    Abstract: A described example relates to a system that includes a microfluidic device and an impedance analyzer. The microfluidic device includes a microchannel extending through a portion of a housing. The microchannel is configured to receive a fluid sample including blood cells that flows along in a direction of fluid flow through the microchannel. The microchannel includes a plurality of micropillar arrays along the direction of fluid flow, and each of the plurality of micropillar arrays is located between a respective pair of electrodes in the microchannel. The impedance analyzer can be coupled to each of the electrodes and configured to measure electrical impedance of at least some of the micropillar arrays at multiple times, in a wash-free assay, including at least one impedance measurement before the fluid sample is flowing through the microchannel and at least one impedance measurement after the fluid sample is flowing through the microchannel.
