Publication number: 20060054092Abstract: A cattle management system and method are provided for managing numerous routine and non-routine management activities. The system and method incorporate a data processing system wherein comprehensive data is gathered and maintained on each individual animal as well as on selected groups of animals. Preferably, a central database is used which allows enhanced functionality with respect to not only data entry and data transfer, but also with respect to providing system generated management recommendations. Some significant functionality of the present invention includes the ability to track the location of each individual animal by utilizing unique identification data for each animal, recording all monitored events that take place at each location during the animal's production cycle, and reporting the events and locations as required to government entities, financial institutions, and other entities within the cattle industry.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 14, 2005Publication date: March 16, 2006Inventors: Neal Valencia, Michael Ackerman, Jim Carisch

Publication number: 20050061424Abstract: A method of forming a workpiece (18) comprises: holding the workpiece adjacent a mould (20); using a laser (30) to heat at least a part of the workpiece to a temperature sufficient to induce superplasticity; and applying a fluid pressure to the workpiece, so that it takes the shape of the mould. This has the advantage that the superplastic properties of the material can be used to form the workpiece precisely to the required shape, without needing to heat all of the processing chamber to the superplastic temperature. Before using the laser to heat the workpiece to its superplastic temperature, the laser can be used to heat the whole of the workpiece to a substantially uniform temperature to anneal it. Similarly, after using the laser to superplastically form the workpiece, the laser is used to heat the whole of the workpiece to a substantially uniform temperature to remove any residual stresses.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 7, 2002Publication date: March 24, 2005Inventors: Michael Ackerman, Terry Flower, Allan Keevil, Jerome Way, Alan Jocelyn, Douglas Nash, Aravinda Kar

Patent number: 6242598Abstract: A process for preparing 2-(2,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-4.6-diaryl-s-triazines in three steps starting with cyanuric chloride is described. Step 1 involves the nucleophilic (basic) displacement of one chlorine atom with a phenolic moiety. Step 2 involves a Friedel-Crafts reaction using a Lewis acid catalyst (preferably aluminum chloride) to replace the remaining two chlorine atoms with aryl groups such as xylyl. Finally, step 3 involves replacing the phenolic moiety with resorcinol using either a Lewis acid or protic acid catalyst or combinations thereof. Some additional processes only peripherally related to the three-step process outlined above are also described for the preparation of various s-triazine compounds. The s-triazines prepared are useful as UV absorbers for the stabilization of organic substrates against the adverse effects of actinic light.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 2000Date of Patent: June 5, 2001Assignee: Ciba Specialty Chemicals CorporationInventors: Tyler Arthur Stevenson, Michael Ackerman, Pascal Hayoz, Roger Meuwly, John Francis Oswald, Christian Schregenberger
