  • Patent number: 8550864
Abstract: A marine propulsion system includes a gearbox housing that is attached to the stern of a vessel hull, a pivot casing that can pivot relative to the gearbox housing for trim/tilt and a lower unit that can pivot relative to the pivot casing to steer. The gearbox housing houses an input shaft, which is connected via a gear set to an intermediate shaft, which is connected via a bevel gear set to a transverse shaft, which extends into the pivot casing. Inside the pivot casing, a drive shaft is connected to the transverse shaft via a clutch assembly and the drive shaft extends from the pivot casing to the lower unit, where it drives a propeller shaft. The pivot casing pivots about the axis of the transverse shaft to trim/tilt and the lower unit pivots about the axis of the drive shaft to steer.

  • Publication number: 20120304619
Abstract: An engine and a method of operating the engine are provided. The engine includes a gas turbine and fan that rotate together to provide an exhaust gas flow stream, which flows over a free turbine that is connected to a power take-off. The free turbine can extract energy from the exhaust gas flow stream and transfer it as shaft power to the power take-off and the amount of energy extracted by the free turbine is controlled by varying the pitch of the free turbine's blades and/or by varying the pitch or stator vanes of a stator upstream of the free turbine. The control over the amount of energy extracted by the free turbine allows the engine to be used to provide thrust from the gas turbine and fan or to provide shaft power at the power take-off, or a combination of thrust and shaft power.

  • Publication number: 20110293427
Abstract: A rotor for a rotary wing aircraft is provided, which includes a hub and a number of rotor blades. Each rotor blade includes an elongate central body that has a leading edge and a flap along the leading edge. The body is pivotally connected to the hub, to pivot about a longitudinal pivot axis, and the flap is pivotally attached to the body. The rotor blade includes a leading camber adjustment mechanism that pivots the flap downwards relative to the body when the body is pivoted in a direction in which its leading edge is lifted. Similarly, the rotor blade has a trailing flap and a trailing camber adjustment mechanism that pivots the trailing flap downwards relative to the body when the body is pivoted in a direction in which its trailing edge is lifted.

  • Publication number: 20110214523
Abstract: A system is operated by a method to provide hydraulic fluid for gear selection and trim in a marine drive by supplying hydraulic pressure to a trim actuator- when trim is required and diverting hydraulic fluid to an accumulator, when trim is not required and hydraulic pressure in the accumulator drops below a predetermined pressure. The hydraulic fluid is directed to the accumulator to maintain hydraulic pressure in the accumulator within predetermined limits and is directed from the accumulator to a gear selection actuator, when gear selection is required.

  • Patent number: 7794295
Abstract: A stern drive for a boat has inboard and outboard portions, the outboard portion having a propeller rotatably disposed thereon, and the inboard portion being adapted to receive rotational power about a motor output drive axis to rotationally drive the propeller. A mounting structure is operative to secure the inboard portion to the stern of a boat in a manner permitting the inboard and outboard portions to be rotated about the motor output drive axis for steering purposes. The outboard portion of the stern drive is rotatable relative to the inboard portion, about a second axis transverse to the motor output drive axis, in raising/lowering/trimming directions.

  • Patent number: 7588473
Abstract: A stern drive for a boat is provided, which comprises an outer structure that is attachable to the stern of a boat, a housing supported in the outer structure, a gear set and reversing clutch inside the housing, said gear set including a pinion that is rotatable about a transverse axis and an output shaft that extends downwardly within a fairing. The housing is rotatable within the outer structure for steering purposes and the fairing and output shaft are rotatable about the transverse axis of said pinion thereby to permit raising, lowering and trimming of the fairing. The clutch includes a selector rod extending along a central passage defined within a transverse shaft, with selector pins extending radially outwardly into a clutch element.

  • Patent number: 6186845
Abstract: A mount for an outboard motor is disclosed in which the cylinder block of the motor is within the hull and the gear box and propeller are outside the hull. The drive shaft passes through the mount from the block to the gear box. The mount permits the motor to be swung about a horizontal axis to raise and lower the propeller. It also permits the motor to perform rotary steering oscillations about an inclined axis which passes through the propeller, or close to the propeller. Because the propeller is oscillated about an axis which passes through or close to it, it remains on the boat center line when the motor is turned for steering purposes and moves to a position in which the line of thrust is downwards.
