  • Patent number: 7639654
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for distributing electronic media to near stationary users, such as in-vehicle users or other mobile users, using short-range high speed wireless access techniques. A content provider stores electronic media at one or more wireless servers positioned at the edge of a network, such as the Internet. The wireless servers transfer the electronic media to one or more subscriber wireless devices using unlicensed frequency bands at relatively short ranges. The wireless servers are generally positioned at convenient locations where users tend to congregate. Media can be cached at desired wireless servers within the distributed mobile broadband network and downloaded to the subscriber wireless devices at the designated locations and subsequently played at the convenience of the user.

  • Patent number: 7031460
Abstract: A telephonic handset comprises an active noise reduction (ANR) system. The ANR system comprises a reference microphone and an IIR filter. The IIR filter is receivingly coupled to the reference microphone with respect to noise reference signals, and it is transmittingly coupled to the receiver transducing element of the handset. The ANR system is configured as a fixed feed-forward noise cancellation system. Preferably, the IIR filter has a transfer function derived, in part, from the open-loop gain of a feedback noise cancellation system. In specific embodiments of the invention, the noise reference microphone is situated so as to sample the ambient noise field near the front face of the receiver, but without directly sampling the noise field on the front face.

  • Patent number: 6748005
Abstract: A system and method to provide cost effective, portable and convenient access to the Internet and other personal computer applications from any location within a predetermined distance from a desktop personal computer (PC). According to one aspect, a compact handheld terminal functions as a user interface device and communicates via an FM frequency hopped radio link with a base station which is located near and connected with the desktop PC. The handheld terminal allows home users to conveniently and remotely interface with their desktop PC with a freedom of movement similar to that of using a laptop PC while allowing an inexpensive network connection. The FM frequency hopped radio link carries the appropriate video, audio, keyboard and mouse signals between the desktop PC and the handheld terminal. The approach may be adapted to short range transfer of high quality video in a variety of applications.

The present invention recognizes that a significant amount of the multimedia content that is of interest to users does not require real-time updates. Thus, the media can be cached at desired wireless servers within the distributed mobile broadband network and then downloaded to the subscriber wireless devices at the designated locations and subsequently played at the convenience of the user.

  • Patent number: 6163610
Abstract: A noise-cancelling handset has reduced inter-user variability. The handset includes an earpiece housing. A space, referred to as the "front volume" is defined by the rear and side walls of this housing and a front surface containing acoustic ports for radiation of received sound into the user's ear. An error microphone is situated so as to sample the acoustic field within the front volume. In use, a further volume, referred to as the "forward volume," is defined between the front surface and the user's outer auditory canal. A leaky acoustic seal typically obtains between the front surface and the user's auditory canal. Thus, the forward volume will effectively have an acoustic leak, which has a characteristic, but variable acoustic impedance that is mostly of inductive character. At least one acoustic port is provided to effectuate a controlled leak to the outside of the handset.

  • Patent number: 5953428
Abstract: A multidimensional feedback system is used to reduce the noise component of a vibrational or acoustic field. The feedback algorithm includes a matrix operator that diagonalizes the feedback system. As a consequence, each of two or more actuators can be treated as though it closes an independent, one-dimensional feedback system. Therefore, classical one-dimensional feedback analysis can be used in the context of a system having multiple error sensors and multiple actuators.

  • Patent number: 5745588
Abstract: An improved, single diaphragm SOD microphone uses acoustic filters to remove resonances associated with the ducting that guides the ambient sound pressure to the front and rear faces of a FOD microphone element. The microphone element communicates with respective front and rear chambers, two ports communicate with the front chamber via front conduits, and two ports communicate with the rear chamber via rear conduits. The microphone further comprises first and second side chambers for dissipating acoustic energy of undesired resonances. The first side chamber communicates with the front conduits, and the second side chamber communicates with the rear conduits. In specific embodiments of the invention, each of the side chambers comprises a branch conduit approximately equal in length to one-quarter wavelength of an undesired resonance. In certain embodiments, each of these branch conduits includes a small neck joining the branch conduit to its corresponding front or rear conduits.
