  • Patent number: 10393287
Abstract: Various implementations provide an inherently safer design feature for microchannel reactors that provides temperature control at the individual channel level. This approach relies on bimetallic strips embedded within the combustion channel, forming a thermally-actuated “valve”. Bimetallic strips convert a temperature change into a mechanical displacement. Heating the strip increases its deflection and thereby restricts flow in the combustion channels, which consequently reduces the rate of heat generation. The thermally-actuated valve is not limited to use in microchannel reactors and may be used in other structures for which thermally actuated flow control is desired, according to some implementations.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 2, 2016
Date of Patent: August 27, 2019
Assignee: Board of Regents, The University of Texas System
Inventors: Michael Baldea, Richard Pattison, Melissa Donahue, Akash Gupta

  • Patent number: 9682357
Abstract: A method of controlling the temperature of autothermal microchannel reactors is disclosed. A hierarchical control structure employs a distributed temperature controller including a phase change material and a supervisory control system including the control of one or more inputs into the reactor. The phase change material acts as a fast, distributed controller, and the supervisory controller acts over a longer time horizon to mitigate persistent disturbances. A stochastic optimization method for selecting the phase change layer thickness is employed.

  • Publication number: 20070029255
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention relate methods to control a desalination system comprising evaluating physical models sufficient to identify physical constraints, evaluating economic models and wherein evaluating the physical and economic models provides a preliminary configuration for the desalination system to reduce the cost of water and provide operating strategies.
