  • Patent number: 9994722
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method for adjusting factory-made tintable paints at the point of sale by adding at least one gloss modifier to the factory-made tintable paints without substantially changing the amount of opacifying pigments in the tintable paints, so that a single color prescription can be used to tint the paints to a single color for any gloss or sheen. Such same color paints should have a color difference of less than 2.0 CIEDE2000 units. Also disclosed is an aqueous gloss reducer that contains mostly a matting agent with substantially no latex resin and substantially no opacifying pigments.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 25, 2015
Date of Patent: June 12, 2018
    Assignee: Columbia Insurance Company

  • Patent number: 8034871
Abstract: The present invention relates to paint extenders or open-time extenders, which are mixed with an architectural coating, such as aqueous latex paints, to increase the coating's open time. The open-time extender comprises acrylic or vinyl latex particles having a mean diameter of less than about 150 nm, and at least one crosslinkable monomer that can crosslink the latex particles in the open-time extender to the latex particles in the architectural coating at ambient conditions. The open-time extender also comprises water and the total solid content of the open-time extender is less than about 15% by weight.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 5, 2008
Date of Patent: October 11, 2011
    Assignee: Columbia Insurance Company

  • Patent number: 7435777
Abstract: The present invention relates to a coating composition and a method for making same. The coating composition according to the invention can advantageously have a low content of volatile organic compounds and can be used in paint and architectural coatings applications for coating on an appropriate substrate. Methods of formulating the coating compositions according to the invention and methods for forming substrate-bound coatings with improved properties are also described herein.

  • Publication number: 20080058473
Abstract: The invention is directed to latex compositions comprising sequentially designed polymer having a first stage, a second stage and a third stage corresponding to a seed, a core and a shell. The latex polymer is suitable for aqueous low volatile organic compounds (“VOC”) paint (less than 50 g/L) with good block resistance, improved open time and increased water softening resistance. To attain good block resistance, the seed and the core contain monomers that form polymers with relatively harder characteristics and higher glass transition temperature (“Tg”) while the shell contains monomers that form polymers with softer characteristics and lower Tg. To gain improved open time, the latex polymer contains suitable level of hydrophilic monomers necessary to hold water. To achieve water softening resistance, hydrophobic monomers are grafted on hydrophilic portions of the shell or the core layers. The invention is also directed to the process of making the latex by a sequential emulsion polymerization.
