  • Publication number: 20070099012
Abstract: A corrosion resistant electrically conductive component that can be used as a bipolar plate in a PEM fuel cell application is composed of an alloy substrate which has 10-30 wt. % Cr, 0.5 to 7 wt. % V, and base metal being Fe, and a continuous surface layer of chromium nitride and vanadium nitride essentially free of base metal. A oxide layer of chromium vanadium oxide can be disposed between the alloy substrate and the continuous surface nitride layer. A method to prepare the corrosion resistant electrically conductive component involves a two-step nitridization sequence by exposing the alloy to a oxygen containing gas at an elevated temperature, and subsequently exposing the alloy to an oxygen free nitrogen containing gas at an elevated temperature to yield a component where a continuous chromium nitride layer free of iron has formed at the surface.

  • Patent number: 7200612
Abstract: A system for improving sensor-based decision making provides for the automatic submission of data obtained locally from instrumentation (such as image data) together with the interpretation of that data, which can be the output of some software which has been checked and possibly corrected by a user according to his/her expertise, to a remote database via an internetwork. The submission to the remote database is preferably automatic so that the remote database grows over time. The local site can access the remote database to retrieve information to assist in interpretation of the locally produced data (for example similar images and their corresponding interpretations), or can retrieve updated or improved software or parameters improving the software used for processing the data. The information on the remote database can also be reprocessed by software agents to provide statistical information based on information from a variety of such local sites.

  • Patent number: 7120276
Abstract: An example system and method for processing image data of a plurality of time-separated images of a non-rigid body to detect movement of the body involves calculating and storing, for each of a plurality of sampling points in each image, a plurality of candidate movements together with the estimated probability of each candidate. For each sampling point, the probability of each of the candidate movements is recalculated based on the stored probability of that candidate movement and the probabilities of the candidate movements at neighboring sampling points. A motion field indicative of the non-rigid body movement is generated from the recalculated probabilities.

  • Publication number: 20060220566
Abstract: In a magnetron having a body 1 defining an anode 2 divided into resonant cavities 4 by vanes 3 and having a coaxial cathode 5, r.f. energy produced when a magnetic field is applied parallel to the axis of the anode is launched along a waveguide 8 by an antenna 6 in an evacuated region of the magnetron closed by a dielectric window 19. The latter has sector shaped conducting areas on its surface symmetrically arranged with respect to the antenna, the inductance of which balance the capacitance of the dielectric window, thereby reducing reflections at the window.

  • Publication number: 20050283102
Abstract: The present invention provides a universally applicable orthosis such as a hip orthosis and includes a semi-rigid hip engaging unit that can be easily bent for attachment to a user's waist. A semi-rigid thigh support member is also easily bent for attachment to either the right or the left thigh of a user. A closure unit enables the user to provide a compressive force on the waist with a mechanical force advantage. The hinge unit extends between the hip engaging unit and the thigh unit to stabilize the limit of the extension and rotation of the thigh relative to the waist of the user. Although the waist engaging unit and the thigh support member are relatively flexible when they bend about the user, they are structured to become rigid to provide stable anchor points for the hinge unit.

  • Publication number: 20050238873
Abstract: A nitridation treated stainless steel article (such as a bipolar plate for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell) having lower interfacial contact electrical resistance and better corrosion resistance than an untreated stainless steel article is disclosed. The treated stainless steel article has a surface layer including nitrogen-modified chromium-base oxide and precipitates of chromium nitride formed during nitridation wherein oxygen is present in the surface layer at a greater concentration than nitrogen. The surface layer may further include precipitates of titanium nitride and/or aluminum oxide. The surface layer in the treated article is chemically heterogeneous surface rather than a uniform or semi-uniform surface layer exclusively rich in chromium, titanium or aluminum.

  • Publication number: 20050152617
Abstract: A method of matching data sets, such as different images, by estimating a transformation which relates the two images. Different candidate transformations are scored by using a similarity measure calculated on the basis of probability density functions derived from the two data sets themselves. The probability density functions are based on local likelihood density estimation (LLDE). The technique is applicable to image registration, and also to data fusion.

  • Publication number: 20050069224
Abstract: A method and system for efficient scaling in the transform domain, wherein transform coefficient data is provided as an input to a data processing system and scaled in the transform domain by application of a combined matrix. Some embodiments utilize discrete cosine transform data. One embodiment of the invention generates a combined matrix for one-dimensional scaling by selecting a rational scaling factor and matrix dimension value, generating a matrix with some zero values, applying a one-dimensional inverse transform, regrouping, and applying a one-dimensional forward transform. One application of the invention performs up-scaling operations, and another performs down-scaling operations. The invention also provides for two-dimensional scaling by selecting horizontal and vertical scaling parameters and generating first and second combined matrices responsive to the parameters and combining them into a single combined matrix. The invention may also incorporate a predetermined cost function.
