  • Publication number: 20060253621
Abstract: The invention classifies volumes (e.g., file systems or LUNs) of a data storage system according to application requirements and allocates space for the volumes on storage devices (e.g., hard disk drives) accordingly. A person such as an IT administrator configures the volumes specifying size, type (e.g., file system or SAN LUN), and priority (e.g., high, medium, low, or archive). The host schedules I/O requests to the storage devices in priority queues using the volume definition to match the application requirements and reduce storage seek time between volumes of different priorities. The host also allocates high performance bands of the storage devices to high performance applications and lower performance bands to lower performance applications. In this manner, the data storage system places data on the band of the storage device that best supports its performance needs.

  • Publication number: 20060087940
Abstract: The present invention relates to write operations in data storage systems. In an embodiment, the invention relates to a method of writing data across a plurality of disk arrays, including writing a first copy of the data as a first plurality of stripes corresponding to the plurality of disk arrays and writing a second copy of the data as a second plurality of stripes corresponding to the plurality of disk arrays, wherein the second copy of the data is staggered with respect to the first copy on the plurality of disk arrays.

  • Publication number: 20060074530
Abstract: A control system (18) and method for controlling an automotive vehicle (10) includes a number of sensors that are used to generate a potential rollover signal. In response to the potential rollover, active differentials (112, 114, 116) may be used alone or in addition to braking to prevent the vehicle from rolling over.

  • Publication number: 20060028063
Abstract: A method for preventing a valve orifice from switching to the small size when a high build gradient is required includes briefly bleeding off a small amount of fluid at the upstream side of the valve. This momentarily reduces the pressure difference when beginning the pressure build. After the valve is opened with the large orifice, the fluid flow through the valve prevents a high pressure difference. The resulting build with the large orifice has the maximum pressure gradient.

  • Publication number: 20050288842
Abstract: The method for controlling a safety system (102-108) of a vehicle (10) determines a reference velocity from a first front wheel sensor (20A) and a second front wheel speed signal from a second front wheel sensor (20B). An axle speed sensor (20C) may be used to determine an axle speed signal. A first rear speed signal and a second rear speed signal are determined from the reference velocity, a slip effect and a yaw signal. The yaw signal may be determined from a yaw rate sensor (28). Safety system (102-108) may be controlled in response to the first rear wheel speed signal and the second rear wheel speed signal.

  • Publication number: 20050246479
Abstract: The present invention relates to systems and methods for configuring a data storage system. One method adds a Fibre Channel device to the loop by beaconing first and second ports, displaying instructions to connect a cable, receiving an indication the cable is connected, enabling the first port, initiating a LIP, and verifying whether the cable is connected. Another method removes a Fibre Channel device from the loop by beaconing the second port, bypassing the first port, initiating a LIP, beaconing the first port, displaying instructions for disconnecting the cable, and receiving an indication the cable is disconnected. A system includes means for displaying instructions to add a Fibre Channel device on the loop and a management controller for beaconing first and second ports, displaying instructions to connect a cable, receiving an indication that the cable is connected, enabling the first port, initiating a LIP, and verifying whether the cable is connected properly.

  • Publication number: 20050223780
Abstract: A method for leak-testing a pipeline system, of the type having a test tee fitting in a standpipe, includes attachment of a leak-testing device to an opening of the test tee. A water hose is coupled to a threaded bushing of the leak-testing device for passing water through a one-way valve into the interconnected pipeline system. After leak testing is completed, a sealing cap is secured over the threaded bushing, and the device is left permanently in place after the test is completed.

  • Publication number: 20050033486
Abstract: A control system for a vehicle (10) is described for use in conjunction with the safety system (44) of the vehicle (10). A tire sensor or plurality of tire sensors generates tire force signals. The tire force signals may include lateral tire forces, longitudinal (or torque) tire forces, and normal tire forces. Based upon the tire force signals, a safety system (44) may be activated. The tire force sensors may be used to monitor various conditions including but not limited to sensing a roll condition, wheel lift detection, a trip event, oversteering and understeering conditions, pitch angle, bank angle, roll angle, and the position of the center of gravity of the vehicle.

  • Publication number: 20040020269
Abstract: A device for leak-testing a pipeline system which can be left in place after the test is completed. A bushing—designed to receive a detachable cap—is attached to a wrench collar and a threaded collar, which all share a common axis. A pressure-activated one-way valve seats against a valve seat disposed along the common axis. The threaded collar of the device is coupled to the opening of a test tee. Fluid passes from a source through the one-way valve into the interconnected pipeline system. After the operator completes the testing for leaks in the pipeline system, a cap may be attached to the bushing.

  • Patent number: 5613082
Abstract: A data storage system includes a data storage medium, such as a magnetic tape, that has a first control data storing area or drive partition that is addressable only by a peripheral drive mounting the medium and a plurality of other addressable data storing partitions for storing data. A volume table of contents may be stored in one of the addressable partitions. A tachometer measures and indicates physical locations on the storage medium. Each of the partitions have an extent on the storage medium indicated by said physical locations. The control data in the drive partition includes directories of medium control blocks, such as tape marks, defect marks and the like; directory of all addressable partitions including the physical locations at the beginning of each partitions and other medium physical and logical parameter data. A so-called mount-demount medium control block in the drive partition indicates a demount status that shows all data stored in the drive partition is valid.
